I sank to the floor, knees hitting the wooden floor with a thud. “No...” My voice came out barely audible.

The white gag muffled the sound of Uruha’s cries that filled my ears.
Reita turned to him, looking at him as if he was something disgusting. “What’s that Uruha, do you want to say something?”

The gun collided with the right side of Uruha’s face with a sickening noise. A stifled cry shot from Uruha’s throat, the lurid red blood started to pour from the gash that the gun made.

“That’ll teach you won’t it?” Reita brought his face close to Uruha. I felt so helpless as I watched my beloved flinch as my so called best friend neared him. “Maybe you shouldn’t be such a filthy little whore.” His deep voice was coated in thick venom. A harder hit earned another agonised scream. “Scream you little bitch, Ruki can’t save you now.”

I heard voices from downstairs, but my eyes didn’t leave the screen for a second.

Reita looked directly into the lense again. Every hair on my body stood up on end, there was nothing human in his eyes anymore.
“Don’t worry, Ruki, I didn’t forget the only thing that whores are good for.” His lip curled as he spoke to the camera. “I fucked him good and hard. But, I can’t help myself; I just love to make them bleed.” He pressed his finger against the gash on Uruha’s face; he dragged it downwards, spreading the blood down the side of Uruha’s cheek.

“Nooo!” A scream that didn’t sound like my own rang through my ears. I couldn’t stop, I tried to pick myself up, but it was no use. I felt paralysed.
My bedroom door opened. “Hey, Ruki I just thought I’d...” Kai’s voice trailed off as he saw me shaking on the floor, then the TV screen, he put the pieces together by himself.
I felt his warm hands shaking me. “Ruki.” He said sternly. “Ruki, this is a live feed, we need to go now.”
“We’ll never find them.” I sniffled, weakly. “It’s too late, I’ve failed him.”
Kai cupped my chin, tilting my head upwards. He pointed at the screen. “Do you see that - the meat stain on the wall?”
I looked up; I’d hadn’t noticed the dark red blur behind Reita earlier. “I’d recognize that anywhere.” Kai continued. “That’s the butchers’ shop where my dad used to work.”
I stared at him, dumbfounded; he pulled me up by my jumper.

“Come on, we don’t have much time, it’s at the other side of the city.”

I was dragged downstairs and strapped into Kai’s Fiat Cinquecento and driving as fast as it could go before I could register what was happening.
I didn’t have time to put shoes on, that didn’t matter, all I could think of was saving Uruha. Kai slammed his fist down on the steering wheel impatiently and regularly. The kind smile was not present on his face for once, and I could tell that he was as frantic as I was.
“Call the police.” He demanded, I flipped open his phone, but my hands were shaking too much to type in the number. Kai took the phone, doing it himself. I heard him give the address, and that a man fitting Reita’s description was holding another captive.
We arrive half an hour later, and I feared it would be thirty minutes too late.

I leapt out of the car as soon as we neared the run-down butchers. ‘Uke & Sons’ was still barely visible on the top of the store, though most of the paintwork had peeled off.
“Shit, it’s locked.” I cursed as I tried to pull open the glass door. All the inside lights were switched off.
“I’ll try the back door.” Kai yelled to me. I nodded, and start to follow. A sudden thought crossed my mind which caused me to stop in my tracks.

Reita was armed, I knew that much. We had nothing to defend ourselves, I searched the glove compartment in Kai’s car...a screwdriver; it wasn’t much, but if the worst came to the worst...my priorities were to protect Uruha by any means.
A loud shot burst through my ear drums, followed by a pained yell.

Kai. Fuck.

I ran, wielding the screwdriver.
He was laid on the floor, clutching his side. His shirt was dyed red.
I crouched down beside him. “Kai...Kai talk to me, are you ok?”
Kai winced as he lifted his head a little to speak. “I’m fine.” He croaked, I gripped his bloody hand with mine as he managed to smile. “G-go...get Uruha. Don’t worry about me.”
I wiped my eyes with my free hand. “You’re going to be fucking fine, ok? Stay with me.”
“I d-d-don’t think I can.” Kai stammered. He was shivering; I pulled off my jumper and draped it over him.
“I won’t be long, just hang in there, Kai.”
“I can’t, Ruki. G-goodbye.” He whispered, and his hand slipped from mine and his eyes closed.
“Kai...” I shook him, and his head lolled to one side.
A few tears escaped my eyes and stained my face. I wiped them furiously. Reita wasn’t taking anyone else from me.

I stormed into the butchers, finding a barely lit tiled room. The meat stain on the wall confirmed I was in the right place.
“Take one more step and I’ll blow his pretty face off.” I hear Reita speak.
I stopped and the lights flicker on, I came face to face with Reita, the muzzle of the gun was pressed against Uruha’s forehead.

“Why? Why are you doing this, Reita?” I asked him weakly. The sight of Uruha in that state and the stench of congealing blood was making me want to gag.
“Life’s hard, Ruki.” He said coldly. “Get used to it.”
“You killed Kai.” My voice cracked. “He was our friend; he never did anything to hurt you.”
“That was a miscalculation.”
“This isn’t you.” I took a small step. “Please Reita, stop this. We’re best friends. We’ve been through everything together.”
His grip on the gun tightened. “Don’t come any closer, Ruki. I swear to God, I’ll kill him.”

I had nothing, no heroic plan. “Kill me instead.” I told him. I felt weak, but my voice stayed strong. “It wasn’t Uruha who hurt you, it was me.” I looked him in the eyes. “Kill me!”

I took one more step. A second bullet exploded from the gun.
I cried out in pain as it tore through the top of my calf and I stumbled to the floor. I heard Uruha’s stifled whimpers.

“Shut up bitch.” Reita yelled at him, before approached me.
He grabbed a fistful of my hair, and yanked my head upwards; I felt the coldness of the gun against the side of my face.

“If that’s what you want.”

I’m so sorry, Uruha. I didn’t want it to end like this. I looked at him, watching agonised from the chair.
“I love you.” I mouthed at him. Then I closed my eyes.

The door of the butchers shop suddenly burst open. “Put the gun down and put your hands in the air!” A voice yelled.
Reita’s grip on my hair disappeared. I opened my eyes as Reita straightened up. A flock of armed police men surrounded us, they seized and cuffed Reita, while some paramedics helped me into an ambulance.
I was relieved to see some less burley looking police men drape a blanket over Uruha and escort him elsewhere.
The police interviewed me while I was in casualty. The doctors said I’d be fine, and I’d be walking normally in a few days.

Uruha crept into my hospital room a few hours later.
“Oh, Uruha. I’m so sorry, I should’ve come sooner. And now Kai’s...” I started to cry as soon as I saw his battered face.
His arms wrapped around me, and he kissed me gently on the lips. “No, it’s not your fault.” He sat on my bed, and stroked my hair. “When Reita called me this morning, I knew he was angry. When he asked me to meet up with him, I knew I shouldn’t have, but he said he would hurt you.”
“Instead he hurt you.” My fingers ghosted over the cut on his cheek.
“It’s my fault.” Uruha said, hanging his head. “I came into your life and screwed everything up. If you want me to leave, I totally understand.”
I gripped his hand. “Whatever happens to me, or to us, I’ll still love you. Do you understand?”
Uruha wiped his eyes with the back of his hand and kissed me again.
“Always.”

I look at Reita from across the square table. He’s dressed in a grey jumpsuit, his dark roots showing through his dirty blond hair.
For a few moments, neither of us say anything, and then he asks.

“Why are you here, Ruki?”
I think before giving him an answer. “There’s no such thing as bad people, just ones that are lost.”
He looks confused. I reach out and touch his pale hand.
“I forgive you, Reita.”
He doesn’t say anything, but I can see the gratefulness in his eyes. They sparkle and there’s a glimmer of hope, they’re not cold and emotionless like the last time I saw them.

“I bet the band’s not as good without me.”
I laugh and he joins in. For a second it’s like nothing’s changed. We’re just two Uni students sharing a joke.

“Visiting time’s nearly over.” Reita says and we’re brought back to the harsh reality. “How is he anyway?”
“He’s fine, thanks.”
Uruha recovered from the ordeal, despite a few restless nights and a fading scar on his face. He made it through fine. He was nearly taken from me. We were now able to enjoy the rest of our lives together - that was something I would never take for granted.
Reita looks at me intently before I leave.

“Come see me again?”
“Of course.” I say, and I mean it.
“If they let me out on good behaviour, maybe in thirty years, we can play together again?”
I nod, and squeeze his shoulder. “You’re on, Rei.”

As I walk towards the van I hear someone slam down on the horn.
“Hurry up, will you?” Our new drummer sticks his head out of the window.
I climb in; Uruha gives my hand a squeeze. “How did it go, baby?”
“Yeah, fine.” I nod, and he gives me a quick kiss.
“Eugh, can you two not?” Our drummer grimaces.
“Oh, shut up, Sono.” I lean forward and ruffle his hair.
He pulls away, protesting loudly. “Watch the mane.” He grumbles, fixing his silver locks in the rear view mirror.

Our bassist shakes his black dreadlocks at us warmly. He’s everything Rei wasn’t. Quiet, punctual, but once he had a bass in his hands, he could play like there was no tomorrow.
Sono turns on the radio. “Hey that’s us!” He grins and turns the dial.

I pull a face. It’s been six years since we struck a record deal, but Sono still gets excited whenever he hears us on the radio.
Uruha just smiles fondly. Like Uruha, Sono wasn’t born with privileges, changing from an under-paid prostitute to the drummer in one of Japan’s most popular rock bands must have been something special.
Tonight was the final show of the tour. It’d been a long couple of months, but we were ready.

“Are you guys pumped up for tonight?” Uruha asks us.
“Can’t wait.” The bassist says.
Bring it on, I think. As long as I have Uruha, I’m ready to face anything thrown at us.

A/N: So, it's finally finished. I feel so *accomplished*
Thanks so much to everyone who read & commented - I doubt I would have completed this without your kind words (and threats...*cough*Squishy*cough*)
Hope you liked the final chapter - I'm no good with endings *head desk*
