Along with matters such as health care and tax laws, legislators also approved some measures taking effect Friday that don't fit into neat categories. Among them:

# YOU CAN TAKE IT WITH YOU: In Florida and Wyoming, restaurant-goers can now take an unfinished bottle of wine home with them, as long as it's put in a sealed container.

# STATE BREAD: "Fry bread," a popular staple among American Indians, becomes the state bread in South Dakota. The green tree frog becomes Georgia's official amphibian. The Virginia big-eared bat is now one of that state's "official" emblems.

# LEAVE THE REF ALONE: Nevada is boosting the penalties for anyone who makes an unarmed assault on a referee, umpire, judge, timekeeper or inspector in retaliation for performing their duties. An assault can bring up to a year in jail and a $2,000 fine.

# INOFFENSIVE LAWS: Indiana is changing language in its code of statutes so as not to offend. "Poor relief" now becomes "township assistance." "Blighted areas" will become "areas needing redevelopment" or "redevelopment project areas." "Mobile home parks" will become "mobile home communities."
