I have a pattern for socks on 3.5mm DPNs that I really want to try, but when I went to get the yarn and needles, the shops only had 3.25 and 3.75mm DPNs. I bought the larger size because i didn't particularly want to buy online.
Anyway, I did a tension gauge on the 3.75mms and the pattern says 19 stitches and 27 rows to 10cm, but I had 1 or 2 stitches extra and the right number of rows. I then tried tensioning on 4mm needles and the tension ended up even tighter. So I'm wondering whether it really matters if i'm one or two stitches out. because I really do not want to buy even more DPNs so soon, and just for a pair of socks too
