back in SD for a few days to pick up Carlos and move to Moab.  man i'm glad she's a dog and not a kid.  all this moving i think would really mess up a tiny person, but it makes for a more laid back dog.

story from the road!
a few months ago i drove to the pecos conference (in pecos, NM just east of Santa Fe).  my alignment was already kinda screwed up,  and i f'ed it BAD at pecos (i Might have driven over a juvenile yucca.  but just once.)  on the 400 or something mile trip back to colorado the car would shake terrifyingly if i took it above 65-70 miles an hour.  but it was sunday in bumfuck nowhere, so i had to keep driving it home.  i took it into the shop, they aligned the tires and rotated the two front ones.  i asked if a tire needed to be replaced, since a tire out of a alignment will usually get some pretty seriously screwed up wear on it, but the people at the tire store told me i was ok.
if the people who sell tires tell me i don't need tires, i must really not need tires, right?
later i had to take it in for an oil change.  perhaps no one looked at the tires (it's not like i paid them to), and there was no mention of tire no-goodness.  though, since the alignment it's pulled Sharply to the left, and it still shakes when it goes over 67 mph.  i figured i'd have a look at it with my dad when i got to san diego.
so, started the thousand mile trek to SD from Cortez.  at 65 fucking miles an hour in a 75 zone across the desolation of the navajo reservation.  a few times, on the downhill parts, i'd exceed my car's speeding ability, and the V8 in the cup holder would rotate.
i stopped only a few times, twice for gas (going that slowly is awesome for conserving fuel) and once to sleep (in a hotel room!  omfg!)  at the second fuel stop, one of the guys working in the garage said "you might want to change to your spare, the side of your tire is badly worn."
the steel belt was piercing through the rubber in no minor way.  the belt was sliding off to the left, and he garage guy was surprised it hadn't peeled off already.  so, had to get a new tire, and replaced another one since it sorta needed replacing (though not badly) and i wasn't in the mood to drive anything less than the safest car ever.
oh, and this was in needles, california.  making this the second time i've had to buy a new tire in needles because of a risk of tire failure.
the rest of the drive was much much faster.  the end.
