Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT)

is freely-distributed software developed by Microsoft for its Windows operating system. The program is updated on the second Tuesday of every month via Windows Update, at which point it runs automatically in the background and reports if malicious software is found. For computers running Windows Vista,  XP, Win 2000, and WinServer 03 for infections by specific, prevalent malicious software- including Blaster, Sasser, and Mydoom-and helps remove any infection found.

  • Microsoft advises you to run this tool even if your computer seems to be fine. You should also use up-to-date antivirus software to help protect your computer from other malicious software.


Spybot Search & Destroy (S&D)

is a popular proprietary spyware and adware removal program compatible with Windows. It scans the computer hard disk and/or RAM for malicious software. Spybot-S&D was written by the German software engineer Patrick Michael Kolla, and is distributed by Kolla's Irish company Safer Networking Limited. It won numerous awards, including the World Class 2003 Awards, the PC Magazine Editor's Choice and PC User Top Buy #1. Additionally, Spybot was recommended by ZDNet, the Wall Street Journal, The Guardian, MSNBC, CNN and other reviewers.

    module can be optionally enabled, providing a level of active, real-time protection from undesirable registry changes and the like. This comes in the form of pop-ups which alert the user to registry changes, and ask for approval before allowing the change. Registry changes only tend to be made when programs are installed/uninstalled/updated, so random changes can indicate the presence of malicious software.
  • Along with spyware and adware detection and disinfection capabilities, Spybot-S&D can repair (Registry), Winsock LSPs, ActiveX objects, browser hijackers and BHOs, PUPS, computer cookies, trackeware, heavy duty, homepage hijackers, keyloggers, LSP, tracks, trojans, spybots, revision, and other kinds of malware. It can also to some extent protect a user's privacy by deleting usage tracks like tracking cookies. Spybot-S&D also includes an "Immunize" feature to block the installation of spyware before it occurs. Another tool included in Spybot-S&D is a file shredder, for the secure deletion of files. Spybot-S&D is not intended to replace anti-virus programs, but it does detect some common trojans. Spybot-S&D also recently added an anti-rootkit function.


SUPERAntiSpyware (SAS)

is a software application distributed as shareware which can detect and remove spyware, adware, malware, trojans, rogue software, worms, rootkits, parasites and other potentially harmful software applications, as well as restore modified system settings. It can detect malware, however it is not designed to replace an antivirus software.

  • SUPERAntiSpyware is updated several times a week, normally daily or every 2-3 days. It is specifically designed to be compatible with other security applications, and therefore can be used with Real-Time protection on even with other applications  It uses only around 500KB of RAM when idle, while protecting.
  • BootSafe, a program that facilitates booting into Safe Mode, is included.
  • A stripped down version named SUPERAntiSpyware Personal Edition



Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM)

is a computer application designed for the removal of and protection from malware. MBAM is distributed as shareware. The freeware version includes on-demand malware detection and disinfection. It is the flagship product of Malwarebytes Corporation, founded in 2004 and located in Champaign, Illinois.
  • CNET cited MBAM being one of the first programs able to disinfect the so-called Antivirus XP 2008 spyware. News organizations have also picked up on MBAM, having mostly positive things to say about program's detection abilities.


VundoFix

is a cleaning tool made by Atribune. Its purpose is to remove Vundo infections from computers and it scans based on registry searching, a file blacklist combined with an additional CLSID blacklist.

RootkitRevealer

is a proprietary tool for rootkit detection on  Windows by Mark Russinovich at Sysinternals. It runs on Windows NT 4 and higher and its output lists Registry and file system API discrepancies that may indicate the presence of a user-mode or kernel-mode rootkit. It was the tool that first detected Sony's XCP rootkit.
