I wanted to add something regarding podfic. Most publishers (at least all the contracts that I've personally seen) require the author to give them exclusive audio rights, so that means that if you decide to sell your fic and it has a podfic done, that podfic would need to be removed from the internet. Potential podficcers should keep in mind that they may be putting several hours of work into a project that the author may ask them to remove. So, they should check with the author first to see what their intentions with the story are.

I see your point, but by that same token the writing itself would need to be removed if it were to be published, due to publishers not liking it on the internet.

I will, however, add a note to the FAQ. Thank you (:

Yes, I didn't mention that because I assumed people already knew it. :) I remember last year someone saying that she intended to publish and thus would have to pull it and asking if that was O.K. But I think that it is not such obvious knowledge that the same thing applies to podfic.

Also, there's no payoff for the podficcer if a story gets published. While the writer gets to see his/her work going on to other realms, the podficcer is left with hours of labor that, if distributed at all, will have to be done in secret.

2 questions: does original music/ sound art count as art?
Can I sign up as both author and artist?

Original music / sound art: Oh yes! That would be awesome to have as art!
Both author and artist: Yes, of course (: No problem with that at all.

Regarding the historical people situation - I have fictional characters who'd be at the centre of the story, but they're related to historical characters - one is the (fictional) mistress of the heir to the throne, and her children are related to the people fighting for the throne in the civil war that eventually ensues after their father's death. Not quite sure whether I'd write about when the children are young, and Alice rebuilding her life after William's death, or about later on, when the civil war is going on. Either way, there's going to be quite a lot of interaction between the fictional characters and real people, although it's Alice's story (with the first option) or her children (with the second option) who would be the focus... but very much set in the historical setting.

Sorry for the rambling, but the basic question is, does this sound like it's going to fall foul of Q27?

Nah! To be honest, I was thinking of it a bit like Asassin's Creed 2 with Leonardo da Vinci; he's not THE main character but he is *a* main character... but not only does that plot sound really good, but it also sounds absolutely fine regarding Q27.

(: Go right ahead.

Thanks, just wanted to be sure. Actually, I may possibly decide to start it just before William dies, to give him a bit of time - I've always felt that he's lost in the shadows of the civil war his death caused, so it'd be nice to bring home that he was a human being too, albeit I have to do the characterisation for him practically from scratch... but really have to think on where to start it, because there's a gap of 15/20 years between his death and the civil war, so really I either have to do a) the aftermath of his death or b) the civil war with a fair bit of looking back from an older Alice.

Off to fill in the sign up form now!

Of course. You can even use a WIP if you like, as long as it isn't posted anywhere (:

Regarding WIPs... rosebfischer May 24 2012, 05:04:08 UTC
I think I may just sign up and drop if I have to because I know that the author sign ups for 2012 end on May 30th. I've got a story/series/thing I've been working on for another big bang. It was supposed to be 3 parts, with a total word count of 20k, but my Part 1 has gone way over that. Would I be allowed to write part 2 for your challenge if Part I was already posted? Each part does have a discreet beginning, middle, and end; it's just that they've turned out to be a lot longer than I planned.
