Week 5

Sep 30, 2009 22:00

1. Saturday Last weekend I did manage to go apple-picking, and it was a beautiful day, but everyone else there was an older grad student with children. Oh well: apples! And even better, cider! And cider donuts! Om nom nom nom. I did miss the football game but that's OK, because we lost. And there are more.

2. Sunday I did a lot of church-ing on Sunday. In the morning I went to Christ Church, an Anglo-Catholic Episcopal church with a Very Very High Church solemn mass. It was overwhelmingly high and I swear, those people crossed themselves more than any Catholic I've ever seen. However, it was also beautiful and had lovely music, and lovely incense, and is basically what I expect church to look/feel like. Sadly the RC parishes that fit that bill are normally wicked conservative, whereas this place has female clergy and rainbow flags and shit. Anyway, after mass I was pressured into going to their oh-so-Episcopalian coffee hour, and then encouraged to come to their 20s/30s supper. It was all a little awkward but pleasant. I washed some dishes and ran down to their Compline service, which is all dark except candlelight, and all silent except the choir's chant and early music. Totally amazing. Following THAT was mass at the Yale Catholic parish, which was pleasant in that everything-I-am-accustomed-to way, from a homily geared to college students to Marty Haugen and the Celtic Alleluia sung by five people. I think I'll do the whole routine on Sundays while I have time-- it's nice break from school.

3. School-week School is pretty much school. I went to a workshop on a case from Ptolemaic Egypt last week (may have skipped class for it...) which was pretty neat -- it's part of their (kind of scant) legal history forum. I also went to a lunch forum about law teaching today, and that, for the most part, was just stressful. It's like... get a PhD! But be careful, because you'll lose touch with the law and no one will hire you! Write as much as you can! Get it published now! WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR GO START WRITING. You also like... can't go immediately onto the market, which is this wacky deal that requires one to get a teaching and/or research fellowship, and/or clerkship, and/or real lawyer job until a few years pass.

Because of their insistence on writing and brainstorming, I may try to do some of that here. If that actually happens I will offer to filter/cut that so as not to kill you if you don't want it.

4.And forward! Friday there's a party at my Contracts prof's house... And then, on Sunday, I leave for a 36-hour field trip to DC. Wheeeee awesome/stressful! We're going to the DC Circuit Court and then the U.S. Supreme Court, to see my professor in oral argument (and, you know, the Supreme Court) on their first day of the new session. That's my week!!
