Personal/Musical/Theological Notebook: Back from Over The Rhine and Vienna Teng

Just in from an evening with Mike and Donna (and Mike's visiting brother Nick) down at the gorgeous old Papst Theater in Milwaukee taking in a show by Over The Rhine, with Vienna Teng opening for them. She was new to me, with me only have heard one song of hers from Emily. Swoon. Both with lovely sets, and OTR as good as I've ever seen them. I ( Read more... )

She's awesome. I've been a big fan for a long time. (http://weaklingrecords.livejournal.com/tag/vienna+teng). We've seen her in little tiny venues, and in much bigger places, most recently at the East Lansing Arts Festival in May of this year. She never disappoints. Buy her albums. They're gooood.

How serendipitous! There's a song of hers that I have loved for years because it was featured in a TV programme, but I only identified it and tracked her down last week. I am now absolutely smitten with her first album Waking Hour, and carefully pacing downloads of her more recent work.

I didn't pick up that one, but I was definitely quite taken with her, too.

I grabbed Warm Strangers and Inland Territory. I had her autograph the latter, and while I was talking with her she took the first, too, and then went through colossal struggles trying to unwrap it to autograph it as well, making my friends make fun of me for "making her do all your work." Yes, I thought she very much held her own against Over The Rhine: a first-rate songwriter. She looped herself repeatedly for vocals and making her own percussion, which I thought so much cooler than playing with recorded tracks: it honoured the audience with all the music being "live."

Angelia Brunner DeWeese made a Facebook comment about your note "Personal/Musical/Theological Notebook: Back from Over The Rhine and Vienna Teng":

Oh I am so entirely jealous for myself that you got to see Over the Rhine; but glad for you! Peoria just doesn't seem to be a part of most people's tour schedules, alas!
