intelligent to the point of intimidation? (as if, eh?)

The crisis of modern times: Finding someone you want to do who wants to do you. (It's my life's goal.)

Oh yeah, there's looking for love, too, but love is all around. Let's not confuse the two. If you can find both at the same time, more power to you!

Me: "I love Pride and Prejudice. Funniest book ever."

Her: "It is! That Jane sure was witty. I read your profile; you seem very interesting and obviously intelligent (maybe to the point of intimidation...)"

Oh gawd, that's just exactly what I don't want to do. I mean, I want to impress people, but I don't want to frighten them into submission. Is this part of the reason I get so few replies? Or is it just something people might use as an excuse because I'm not Adonis? (And I'm cool with that - it's not like I have the temerity to come out and say (even to myself, sometimes) that I'm just not into someone because I don't find them attractive. I'm sure many many many women feel that way about me!)

Upon further thought, I might be one of those annoying people who's good at impressing people who aren't experts or specialists in any of the things I talk about. I can spout facts, but maybe I'm not as good at seeing the forest for the trees. Perhaps more people see through me than I'd care to admit.

In any case, I'm sure most of my former science and engineering classmates would laugh at the notion that I am intelligent to the point of intimidation!

Me: "I seem to have that problem a lot. :-p"

Her: "You're very funny too though and don't seem to take yourself too seriously, so it all balances out, I think."

Well, maybe there is hope for me yet then.
