I got a card from one of my students last night, too. I almost broke down in tears. She’s such a keener, such a go-getter, and she never hesitated to speak up - gosh, she’ll do great things. I deserve very little credit for that of course; it’s almost more heartening that she took the time to write to me. I don’t expect or really want this to last ( Read more... )

fyi, make sure you put some research time into how much those research stipends are. more often than not, those stipends/grants/scholarships/fellowships must also cover your tuition and fees. this is the same in all fields - arts and science. E.g. get a scholarship of $17500, but then substract $7000 to cover tuition. Therefore, you've got a little more than $10k to live on for the year.

Also, if you get a scholarship from an outside funding agency (be it gov't, and NGO, or private), often the school - not just Dal, but any school - will reduce their internal funding amounts by the amount of your extern award. in this manner, the external awards you receive effectively go on to fund **other students** as opposed to you because the Uni will then redistribute the scholarship pool..

i promise you that even though I had the best scholarship one could get at Dal last year, that i was a hungry, hungry soul.. seriously dude, don't bet your happiness on the reported grad-student lifestyle, because it's nothing more than a cruel myth. go to grad school because you are certain that whatever you are planning to do with it is likely to pay off in dividends shortly after.

(long story short: even at the grad level, you're still a student. a poor student. it still sucks. and the older you get, the less fun it is..)
