photos from Ottawa
Laugh if you will, but today, 13 months after my program in Ukraine began, I am finally thinking about doing something with my cityscape-like piles of photo CDs. (And I did make a start - see below for more details)
I've been trying this really interesting service called Flickr. If only there were a way to get a Flickr-like interface going on my website - thanks to Cedrick, I already get generous web hosting and I don't need Flickr for its storage or bandwidth - just its easy organization. It does all the resizing chores for me, for instance. I will never again have to consider uploading the same picture in multiple resolutions. I can do quick little changes in seconds that used to take 10-15 minutes.
On the downside, I'd have to pay something like US$25 to get anywhere with it, and even then there's a 2GB upload limit. That'd be plenty for day-to-day purposes, but I'm talking about catching up on a year of pictures (and I've been putting off doing it on willmatheson.com because it's a lot of work). If it wasn't for that limitation, I may have signed up already. I'm also noticing that it's been axeing down my photos to a maximum resolution of 1024x768, which it isn't supposed to do on a paid account, but I'm not happy that it did that without warning me.
What I really need is a content management system that is easy to use but one that I can still implement on willmatheson.com. I tried JAlbum, which seemed like a good idea (and it's the only game in town for some people without Windows XP or OS/X), but trying to get it to work the way I wanted it to was a nightmare. It took days and days and days just to get my Grande Prairie photos up - you may have noticed I seldom link to them because I'm just not happy with the results compared with my photos from Poland where I put them up the good old-fashioned way.
I think I know what I'll do now, but I'd like your input. Please compare these two photosets:
1. (The old way) Photo Series #20: NetCorps exchange, Phase 2 (Poland), and other stuff
2. (The potential new way) Canada Corps 2005 - Ottawa - a photoset on Flickr
