Standing 5'10" and weighing in at 141 pounds, Oshitari is lithe and muscular from years of tennis. He has blue-black hair, deep violet eyes, and a generally smug expression. Oh, and those glasses? Just for show, and the ladies love them.

PERSONALITY: His captain calls him the most troublesome guy in Hyotei Academy, and after a one-set match anyone who plays him understands why. Oshitari is cool, collected--and, to be honest, kind of a jerk. He loves to toy with his opponents, and he wants them to know it. Oshitari is an expert at reading his opponent's body language and expressions to determine what they're thinking. He watches closely, comparing their play style to what he's seen before, even calculating what percentage of his rival's power they're using.

Of course, he hates to be read in return. He is a master of the poker face, staying calm no matter how heated the battle may get. That's also one of the reasons he wears false glasses; they serve almost as a mask, helping him conceal his feelings and giving the appearance of a weakness where none exists. Only the fiercest opponents can get under his skin, and he'll return the favor, stepping up his game in kind. This can be most clearly seen in his national quarterfinals match against Seigaku's Momoshiro. Momo had spent time training in the mountains to heighten his senses, and used his new connection with nature to put Oshitari on the run by timing his shots to be carried by the wind and altering the ball's path by bouncing it off a tiny stone. Oshitari responded by pulling out his best moves and utilizing a control-focused play style to lead Momoshiro into errors and tire him out with useless running, eventually causing the other boy to injure himself by running into a pole. (Though he styles himself as a gentleman, he can't be held responsible if his tactics cause someone to act carelessly!)

Off the court, he can be a bit of a snob; he sneers at Seigaku's run-down mountain training house (and jumps when an unexpected frog spooks him). Sometimes he is even outright catty, at one point calling a rival "pointlessly gorgeous." He's used to being fawned over; Oshitari's skills are many. In addition to tennis, he also plays violin, and his best subjects are math and chemistry. He has quite the fan club at Hyotei, and is commonly called a "prodigy" and a "genius." However, he's grown used to that sort of attention, so he'll certainly have a little difficulty adjusting to a new school in a foreign country where no one knows who he is. The hallways will feel much quieter to him without pretty girls calling his name.

And Oshitari does love those pretty girls--his favorite type is stated to be "girls with nice legs." He goes out of his way to act chivalrous, addressing the lucky ladies he's taken a liking to as "ojousan" (a particularly noble way of saying "Miss") in his low, oddly sultry voice. When he likes a girl he makes an effort to take care of her, inviting her out frequently, scolding his friends if they tease her too much, and leading during the sports day folk dance. He is inclined towards sentimental gestures such as dropping ¥5000 into a claw machine to win a stuffed animal for her. He also enjoys romance movies so much that he'll go to the theater all alone to watch them (and he even cries at the end).

However, his position within Hyotei has made dating difficult for him. He wants to find a girl who wants to get to know the "real" him, instead of only valuing him for his skill at tennis and the social status it's granted him within the school. Despite his high profile, however, he doesn't think of himself as terribly flashy--that title goes to his close friend Atobe, the conceited and obscenely wealthy team captain. Oshitari prefers a simple takoyaki stall to a fancy European cafe.

A big part of his personality is his Kansai pride; if there's takoyaki around, Oshitari is the first in line. Though it's been a few years since he moved to Tokyo from Osaka, he has yet to drop his Kansai accent and dialect in favor of standard Tokyo Japanese. He is also very close to his cousin Kenya, who still lives in Osaka attending Shitenhouji Academy, and they have long phone conversations several times weekly. However, he does take offense to being stereotyped as the typical Osaka penny-pinching funny-man, and one of the few times he has lost his temper in public is when Hikaru Amane of Rokkaku Academy tries to rope him into a traditional manzai two-man comedy act.

COMPUTER APTITUDE: Decent. He could use message boards, general Internet searches, e-mail and IMs with ease. He's a sharp guy and could probably learn to code in HTML or CSS if he was inclined to learn, but he doesn't have very much interest in that kind of thing. However, as a well-off Hyotei student, he is used to having the very best and latest cell phone/mp3 player/laptop on the market purely as a status symbol.

AU HISTORY: Oshitari was born to upper-middle-class parents in Osaka and displayed an aptitude for tennis at a young age. His parents got him the best tutors possible and allowed him to develop at his own pace without pushing him into tournaments too often. Despite his infrequent entries, he made a name for himself on the junior tennis circuit of the Kansai region.

After Oshitari finished elementary school, his father, a doctor, was offered a position at a prestigious Tokyo hospital. The entire family was uprooted and Oshitari enrolled at Hyotei Academy, a school famous for its excellent tennis club. On his chaotic first day of middle school he met many of the boys who would become his best friends, including the class president, Keigo Atobe. Atobe's wealthy family paid for several expensive improvements to the school's dining and sports facilities, and at the semester's first meeting of the tennis club Atobe insisted on challenging the upperclassmen to prove his superiority. Seeing him defeat all of the club's regulars, Oshitari decided to take him on himself.

Oshitari was the first one to provide Atobe with any sort of fight, and from that moment both a friendship and rivalry was created, prompting Oshitari to phone his cousin back in Osaka to let him know that "Tokyo doesn't suck as much as I thought it would."

He spent the next two years training within Hyotei's strict tennis club, working to distinguish himself from among over 200 other club members. Coach Sakaki had high standards that did not permit failure of any sort--if any of the eight regulars lost even a single match, they would be immediately cut from the team. Oshitari maintained his win streak right up until Doubles 2 versus Seigaku, as during the Fudomine-Hyotei matches junior members of the club were sent to compete against their unseeded opponents (and lost miserably).

However, he made the mistake of starting a rivalry with Seigaku's Momoshiro at a street tennis court when he described the other boy as "nothing special." Shortly after, he and his acrobatic teammate Gakuto faced off against the makeshift Kikumaru-Momoshiro doubles pair at the Kantou Regional tournament and suffered a humiliating 4-6 loss. Multiple other losses by the Hyotei side forced Coach Sakaki to rethink his management strategy and as a result none of the regulars were ejected from their positions--a lucky save for Oshitari.

After the Kantou Regional, several of the Hyotei players attended the selection camp for the Goodwill Games against a group of American players. Oshitari was paired with Seigaku's Kikumaru, an acrobatic serve-and-volley player whose style was similar to Gakuto's. Though they lost their match, both boys left the Goodwill Games with a renewed determination to improve their tennis.

The Hyotei team remained dejected by their loss until it was announced the the host city of the Nationals (Tokyo) could invite one more of its teams to compete. Due to the special invitation they were able to face off against Seigaku once more. Oshitari split off from Mukahi in order to play the Singles 3 match against his rival Momoshiro. Despite his win, Hyotei was ultimately defeated in the quarterfinals and unable to advance further in the tournament.

Oshitari and the other third-years graduated middle school and advanced to Hyotei's high school division, and Atobe once again asserted his dominance of the tennis club. However, after a few months had passed it became apparent to Oshitari that despite their long association and deep friendship, something needed to change. He spoke to his former coach Sakaki about his feelings of stagnation and dissatisfaction.

Sakaki suggested that perhaps it was time for Oshitari to lead, and recommended a prestigious European academy which had no previously established tennis club. His mind made up, Oshitari convinced his parents to send him away to Reims and bid an emotional farewell to his friends, determined to become a stronger tennis player.

SAMPLES

INTRANET/1ST PERSON SAMPLE:

Well, well, Reims Academy. Shall we heat things up a bit?

I'm Yuushi Oshitari, the new transfer student from Japan's famous Hyotei Academy. I've come here to start your tennis club. There's no cause for concern~ I have lots of experience, after all.

Of course, I'm not going to require the same of you. It'll be my pleasure to offer lessons to anyone who wishes to join. I've had the best coaches, so I look forward to passing that knowledge on to you.

So, students of Reims, let's get along well from this day forward, hmm?

LOG/3RD PERSON SAMPLE:

Well, then, third bell. Oshitari pulled a crumpled schedule out of his pocket to consult it again. Let's see, he'd just come from the Humanities Building, and he was en route to math class--would that be in the Science Building? Or perhaps it was in the Old Science Building, hmm...

He knew that the student guide who'd shown him around campus yesterday had told him the answer to this, and he wracked his brain for it. But truth be told, he hadn't paid too much attention to her words--he'd been much more focused on the sway of her long legs under that pleated skirt. He almost smirked, thinking about it, but carefully rearranged his features into a poker face upon remembering that he was still surrounded by strangers.

Damn it. Where was that wretched class?! The bell rang again, signaling the end of passing--that couldn't have been five minutes, could it? He couldn't have been lost for that long!--and Oshitari sighed. Let's see, maybe if he took a right around this next corner...

Well, that was useless. That was the Health Center. He'd made sure to pay attention to that bit of the tour; after all, he'd need to know where the tennis courts were. He paced around the building till he reached the outdoor courts, sinking into a spectator seat as he tried to get his bearings. He ran a hand through his perfectly-styled hair, mussing it before he fished his cell phone from his pocket. Kenya would understand. Kenya would commiserate with him.

"Your Docomo handset is currently out of its service area," a tinny prerecorded voice informed him. Oshitari slumped down, closing his eyes.

"France is the complete pits," he muttered.

HAVE YOU READ THE FAQ? Those wombats sound pretty damn scary.
