it wasn't not unusual, pete in this state. it was a cycle, really. the show ended, and he'd be excited and talkative and bouncing off the motherfucking walls. then he moved on to this state of false wisdom, but give it a couple of hours, and he's staring into space, mouthing words through mid-thoughts and he looked like a ten-year-old asking are we there yet?.
because it was such a normal thing, almost a touring ritual, no one payed him much attention past the initial talking (and drinking and touching and so much more) frenzy. no one except patrick. he was there, most of the times. with a shoulder or an awkward hug or a good sci-fi discussion.
he was there and he hummmed and nodded and smiled gently every time pete said patrick. patrick i miss home. he didn't say i miss them or i miss here and, in retrospective, patrick thinks maybe that makes sense, seeing what comes

ryan has no control over himself. he just can't stop. most of the time, his mind is too far away to register what his body is doing. so he does everything absent-mindedly and he doesn't really notice, until someone has to get him to stop. like when he downs shot after shot of tequila and spencer has to press a hand to his shoulder before he realizes what he's doing. or when he reads faulkner for days and william has to bring him some hemingway to detox
