Alice had had worse mornings, but considering the sum total of Alice's mornings, that was not saying much at all.
Memories poured back in a confused rush.
Finding Zack, whom she had regarded as a lover or a child. Following Zack down dark pathways to meet his dark Mother. It had been her suggestion that led to
attacking Jen. Luckily for all,
Jen had escaped, though she had been vexed at the time. Then, the sting of loss:
Zack choosing his other Mother and discarding her.
Scared, betrayed, and furious, she'd gone in search of Kate, but
Kate had not been the Kate she remembered. And now, Leto's Kate must think her mad, or dangerous, or both. So must the boy she'd fought
in the graveyard.
In her dream, in her nightmare, she had been alone. Abandoned by all around her. And now, those phantoms had very probably cost her some of her own dear friends. She would be astonished if Jen wanted to be near her.
Alice had Dinah, held close on her lap. Alice tried not to think about what casualties must even now be rippling outward.
