Sirius stared down at the parchment in his hand. He'd recognized the owl that brought it immediately, of course. The family owl. He'd thought at first that it was from his brother. They had been corresponding somewhat recently, though usually more covert than this. When he saw his mother's elaborate handwriting on the outside, he almost hadn't opened it. Then a sense of curiosity about she'd handle this latest action taken by her oldest and most disappointing son had overcome him.
It was short and impersonal, lacking any sort of greeting at all, much like their face-to-face encounters they'd had over the years.
Having examined the situation, and owing to your expressed desire never to set foot in this house again, and the disappointing fact that you have no sense of family duty whatsoever, we feel it best that you are no longer associated with this family, or considered its representative or beneficiary at any point in the future.
So he wasn't considered part of the family anymore and was finally free of their ridiculous expectations of him. This was the best news he'd had all summer. He dismissed the owl, crumpled up the note, and tossed it into the nearby trashbin, which belched as if trying to rid itself of something unpleasant. "Exactly," he said to it as he left the room and his family's final judgment behind him.
