History: The Jeanné family is a minor noble house well-known for one thing: its women are excellent guards, and its men have generally never amounted to much. Women who marry in are not true Jeanné, but their daughters are, and their daughters will unfailingly prove the rumour true (or at least, this is how history remembers them). The family is large and it isn't uncommon for Jeanné to marry Jeanné in the hopes of keeping the blood inside the name.

So the moment Baxter's family discovered that their new addition was not another prized Jeanné female, his fate was sealed. He could never be Good Enough. His childhood was spent in constant competition with two sisters, Alison the elder and Charlotte the younger, both of whom were extremely adept at anything they put their minds to. Baxter, who was very competent at least as far as his intellectual education went, was nonetheless ignored in favour of his sisters' triumphs. No matter what he did, he was overshadowed by the fact that the girls in his family were just Better Than Him.

This imbued in him the dire need to prove himself. He studied hard and trained, willing to do anything to try to prove to the family that he was worthy of the Jeanné name. Sadly, none of it worked. He'd just get a customary pat on the head and a patronizing, "That's nice Baxter." He could singlehandedly bring about world peace and his family would say, "That's nice," and then turn around and give his sisters a standing ovation for remembering to polish their armour.

But he was determined. His sixteenth birthday was celebrated by joining the Guard. The Royal Guard, even, because his Aunt Gertrude was the Lieutenant in charge of them. If he could make it as a Guard, he could prove himself as a Jeanné. Sadly, Baxter didn't count on one very vital thing:

A life spent as the overshadowed black sheep of the family left him completely unable to cast any sort of imposing figure. He sucked at being authoritative. He sucked at thinking on his feet. The truth was, he sucked at being a guard. Baxter quickly learned that he was completely mediocre, and with a family name like his to live up to, that meant he was awful. But with his aunt in charge, the only thing his superiors could do was shuffle him around to wherever he'd cause the least damage, and he won't take the hint to leave on his own because he's still determined to see this through and prove himself to his family.

Which is unfortunate, because he'd make a wonderful fileclerk or records-keeper, but he's too busy trying to live up to his name to play to his own strengths.

Personality: Baxter is a person with a lot of strong opinions, but no willingness to voice them. Years of being overlooked and ignored have conditioned him to bottle up his feelings and never express his dissent. On the outside, he seems like a mousy, quiet, soft-spoken person, but on the inside he's full of pent-up rage that comes through in spurts, either through occasional statements that slip out during conversation, or through passive-aggressive comments or actions.

He tries to be friendly, but he's always a little too soft-spoken, a little too shy. His lack of confidence comes through in every action, and he seems perpetually dejected. He has the look of a kicked puppy. Overall this makes him a really awful guardsman, but he's so determined to prove himself to his family that he's stubbornly sticking with it, despite knowing deep down that this was probably the worst career move he could have ever made.

He feels that the Hour is doing a lot of things without consideration for the consequences, that Others are dangerous and should be monitored closely, that the Citadel is too openly hostile toward the Hour, that the Citadel is trying to start a fight, that the Hour is goading them to, that the duchess is running the kingdom in a bad direction, that Belief is a dangerous force that shouldn't be played with, (and that Belief is the reason he's so awful at his job,) that the king is spineless, that nobles are too busy squabbling with each other to do any good with their money, that the kingdom is ignoring its destitute when it should be caring for them, etc etc etc, and these are the "very strong opinions" that he keeps bottled up except for occasional cracks in his wall. He also kind of hates his family and the occasional complaint about his mother getting his favourite colour wrong or his aunt being an asshole will make it through, but he takes those back really fast.

Also he loves turtles and thinks they are the most fucking adorable thing in the world. He has a pet turtle named Speedy. People keep telling him it's creepy but he can't see why! That thing where you look away for a second and when you turn around he's RIGHT BEHIND YOU, that's just a thing Speedy does!

Personality Keywords: mousy, quiet, angry, opinionated, determined, unconfident, nervous, incompetent

Appearance: Members of the Jeanné clan tend to bear an uncanny resemblance to each other, and Baxter is no different. He has the typical Jeanné brown eyes and blond hair, along with the soft, rounded facial features. If you've ever seen the Jeanné women before in your life, it is very easy to peg Baxter as a member of the family.

He stands an unimpressive 5'2" and even in his Guard armour, he is completely unimposing. The way he carries himself shows a lack of conviction, and he seems perpetually nervous and uncertain. If he had some confidence it might make up for his small frame, but alas, that is asking far too much of a Baxter.

Languages Known: English (literate)
Skills: Superb organizational skills and a keen memory for numbers and facts, his technical skill in swordplay is not bad but his applied skill is awful
Strengths: He is very knowledgeable, especially about the political situation in Balfour; loyalty to what few friends he has; he has a strong activist streak, if only he'd be confident enough to express it.
Weaknesses: Bats. He is terrified of bats. Can't think on his feet in a fight or adapt quickly to his opponent; inability to express his feelings clearly.
