So, after a few days of trying not to worry, of taking stupid things too hard, and of pretending he just didn't care anymore, Billy now found himself back in Barney's apartment

Barney exited the hospital feeling confident in the fact he wasn't about to die and feeling..well, not very much. His complaining and moaning about the pain had gotten him an extra dose of morphine from the nurse, so he was quite happy with himself.
"I think that went rather well!" He said, smiling at Billy.
Billy couldn't tell if he liked Barney on morphine any better than without, but at least he was cheerier. It had been a rather uneventful visit, with stitching and drugs and antibiotics to take home, and Billy, well, Billy hadn't left his side and now had to make sure he got back as safely as he got in, which meant stuffing him into another cab. "Yeah. Well. Except when you tried to grab the one nurse. Her ass is not a handle. I thought she was going to stab you with a scalpel."
Barney laughed. "That was an accident. I was falling off the table and her ass was helping to support me! Either way it got me more morphine." He looked at his newly bandaged right hand.
"You think she believed the story of how I saved the baby from the locked car? I think she did."
"Yeah, no more morphine for you. I don't need to have you wandering around in a drugged up haze of unfeeling. Just have to wait for it to wear off now. Also, I think she was skeptical. A little bit. Maybe. I think you should've gone with the one about the little old lady."
"Guess you'll have to stay the night then. I'm known to wander in my sleep!" Barney giggled at nothing. "The baby one tugs more on the heart strings..or maybe the old lady one does. I should have gone with the old lady one. Lets go back! I must re-do it!"
"Noooononono, we're not going back. We're going to go home, and I'm going to put you to bed, and yes, I'm going to stay the night." Which might be a very long night. "Next time you tell someone that story, it could be an old lady and a baby. Just to cover your bases."
"No. Really no. Bad idea kind of no. Home. Hoooome. No bars. No anywhere else. No Maclaren's. I'll write it down somewhere and you can remember to try it out on people tomorrow."
"Yeah, alright. I suppose that works. I doubt Robin would believe my story anyway. And if Ted is there!" Barney raised his eyebrows. "Ooooh boy, that would not be good." Barney looked at the newly fallen snow outside the cab. It was brighter than he remembered. It looked clean. Maybe Billy cleaned it.
"I'm sure it wouldn't be. See, even more reason why you shouldn't do it tonight anyway. No getting into any stupid fights over anything." He nudged Barney gently. "Hey, come on, we're home. Don't make me carry you, because you know I will if I have to."
At least that was something semi-sensible. He couldn't help but laugh a little. "Okay. But you remember I already have a key to your place, right? Because I do. That's okay, no working the hands. Let all that rest up and properly heal over. You should thank me once that happens." Probably wouldn't happen while not loopy, but he liked to think it would.
"I won't if you tell me what's in it." He had actually completely forgotten about said box until it was brought back up (although, he remembered it was still sitting in the room, so he would've seen it soon enough). "You're being awfully mysterious about it."
"I think that went rather well!" He said, smiling at Billy.
