SHIELD File Personality: The problem with Tony is that he's an all-or-nothing sort of guy. Designing weapons or trying to save the world. Being a self-absorbed asshole or being suicidally heroic. No middle ground. When he decides to do something, he does it 110% and to the exclusion of everything else. Of course like everyone else he has his good points and his bad. The complication is that they aren't really separable. His tendency to think in odd, counterintuitive circles is what makes him a brilliant engineer; it's also what makes many of his actions seem, to anyone not privy to the thought processes behind them, completely insane.
A lot of his issues can probably be attributed to spending his whole life constantly in the public eye; having your every move picked apart by the tabloids does tend to lead to something in a "fuck what everyone else thinks" attitude. In particular his trust issues have their roots here. Growing up in the public eye meant that pretty much everyone who ever tried to get close to him had an ulterior motive - a little reflected fame, money, whatever. So he's basically preemptively dickish just so no-one has any illusions about him actually buying the act. So when you get people like Pepper, with whom it's not an act, he just has no idea how to deal with it.
When backed into a corner - physically or metaphorically - he tends to lash out. The best defense is a good offense, and he'd rather die than appear vulnerable in front of someone he perceives to be a threat.
History: Tony was born in the spring of 1970, the first and only child of famed industrialist Howard Stark. At seven years old he was sent to the Phillips Academy boarding school, finishing early at the age of fourteen. He was accepted to study engineering at MIT and graduated three years later at the top of his class.
After college he went off the rails in a big way and all but vanished; getting into sex, drugs, rock'n'roll, and anything else that seemed like it might bring the family name into disrepute in an entertaining way.
