Teddy had spent that last few hours in varying states of panic. He tried to *69 the number so he could talk to Billy, but that was a dead end. It gave him the number of some restaurant where he was assured by the maitre de that no one named Billy worked, patronized, or even passed by there.
It took him far too long to remember that staying at a S.H.E.I.L.D. safe-house means being hidden completely from people with the amount of technological skill that Teddy possessed.
Finally the phone
rang again.
Teddy picked up the phone before it had time to complete the first ring. "Billy?"
A throat cleared on the other end of the phone. "We need to talk," Billy said, voice wavering with emotion.
"Oh God, Billy. I didn't mean for it to happen. I was really drunk. Really really drunk. You have to know that I would never do something like that to hurt you. Please believe me!" Teddy babbled, letting all the things he had meant to say before Billy hung up on him spill out.
"I believe you," Billy replied quietly. "I know you aren't that kind of person, I just..." He trailed off as his voice cracked. There was a pause as he took a deep breath to calm down. "It hurt to hear that, okay?"
Teddy wanted nothing more than to be there with Billy and be able to comfort him. "I didn't mean to hurt you. I just, just wanted to be honest. I can't lie to you."
"I think," Billy started to say. "I think that we should break up."
"What? Billy no! It will never happen again! I swear!" There was that panic again. He couldn't lose another person he loved, he just couldn't.
Billy ignored his pleas. "We were being naive to think that this long distance thing could work when we couldn't even talk to each other," He said, sniffling as he spoke. Oh God, Billy was crying. No, no, this was not right.
"Billy, please!"
"If you-" Billy stopped and corrected himself, "When you come back home, we'll see if you and me will still work."
Teddy didn't know what to say, there wasn't anything he could think of to change Billy's mind, so he stayed silent. Billy took the silence as acceptance and continued to speak. "I'll call you again to let you know how we're doing. Goodbye Teddy."
"Goodbye Billy," Teddy replied dumbly. The phone clicked yet again as Billy hung up.
He stared at the phone again before throwing it across the room toward his desk, shattering it.
