So, probably should have put this up sooner, but I figured there are some details about Harry's past that some students and staff might know through rumors.
Given that Sasuke has spent a lot of his life in/around the Ministry due to not only his family's former connections to the Department of Magical Law Enforcement and the Aurors, and the messy investigation/clean-up of their subsequent massacre, he would probably have at least a vague idea of points 1, 2, and 4. I don't think he'd recognize Harry's name from his arson/murder? trial, but he would have a knowledge of the case, definitely.
Going the other way, do you think it would be likely/possible that Harry would have heard of Sasuke's brother's involvement in the massacre? It was a pretty high-profile case about nine years ago, and Itachi's still high on the wanted Dark Wizards list.
Yes, that seems reasonable. The fact that Harry's so close with Sakura and Catty recently might also result in Sasuke getting a few more hints about the strangeness of Harry's past, and he might start connecting the dots, but it'll take a while. Both Bob and himself occasionally let things slip.
I actually don't think that's likely unfortunately. Basically Harry knew zilch about the Wizarding world until he was ten, and even after that Justin gave him very biased and distorted accounts of the larger magical community, keeping him from any contact with it, so as to better control him. Now, Harry is naturally inquisitive, so if for some reason Sasuke pings on his radar he might start looking into it, but I don't think he'd start off with any clue.
Right. Sasuke wouldn't be interested unless somehow something got mentioned that reminds him of his past enough for him to start digging, but he's not naturally curious and wouldn't pursue it unless it related directly to him. So that would take a loooong time if it ever happened at all.
Okay! I don't know why Sasuke would ping on his radar, but if he ever does, the case would be pretty easy to research, as it garnered quite a bit of publicity back in its day.
Would any of the staff who were/are Aurors know about this? There are a lot, Shalice being one of them. It might be interesting for Shalice and Harry's stuff if she is aware of it.
Well we've already decided that Roy recieved a detailed file on Harry's case before Harry arrived at Hogwarts, though how much he's actually told his subordinates is probably a bit more limited.
I would imagine any former Aurors would know about Margaret and Justin, though not their connection to Harry unless they have friends in the Aurors who would tell them about the trial. Rangiku at least knew about Margaret from her file, and Harry confirmed to her that Margaret LeFay was his mom, so it's not a stretch that Shalice could learn of this. Honestly, Shalice might actually know more about Margaret than Harry, since he never knew her and she kept him and his father utterly in the dark about her being a wizard.
I think Shalice probably still has friends who are Aurors (it's my headcanon that her castmates are Aurors lol) so I don't think it'd be totally unlikely that she would know about their connection to Harry. But if she does or not is totally up to you!
Shalice and Ran are BFF so it's possible Ran let her in on it, unless she was sworn to secrecy or something. If you could give me any specifics that Shalice would know about Margaret, that would be sweet.
Well, I'd imagine the trial was rather controversial, since they were going to send a 16 year old to Azkaban for defending himself. I know Roy did not approve, and it's possible one of her friends vented to her about the trial.
Harry never technically swore Rangiku to secrecy, and she did offer to help find whatever she could about his mother. While I doubt she'd tell everyone I could see her asking Shalice for more info and advice, though you'd have to check with Bella. I'm cool with it.
