After leaving Caritas, Angel and Callisto went back to his room. Angel sat down on the edge of the bed, absently petting Sean who'd come over to greet him, and looking at nothing in particular.
"My whole life," Angel said, quietly. "Even if you don't count - you know, him. My whole life. A century of - of never having - of not even one person who would... and then it was all of them."
Angel looked up at Callisto, quietly begging for even some of that to make sense to her.
Callisto was quiet a long time before speaking. "Everyone who's ever given a damn what happened to me is either at this school or over six years dead," she shrugged. "Hardly stacks up when compared to your case, but there you go."
"Heady isn't it?" Callisto smiled slightly. "Being around people who don't want anything from you apart from your time. Not worrying about having to stick a knife in their backs or avoiding one in your own."
"There were so many people," Angel said. His hands were trembling. "So many who did something, or wanted to - and then they were there tonight and they saw me and they were happy."
"That's because they care about you," Callisto reached up to cup his face. "Rory, Bridge, Parker, Logan, we all care about you. Don't ever let yourself believe otherwise."
"Usually when there's that big a crowd of people they're trying to help my death along." Angel tried, and didn't quite succeed, to come off like he was totally recovered now and able to joke about it.
"I guess you'll just have to get used to as many people trying to save you as kill you," Those weren't tears in Callisto's eyes. Really. "One of those non-sucky things about being a hero."
That was okay. Angel certainly wasn't feeling anything like that either.
"Can we - " Angel tried to gather himself together. "I kinda want to do this thing where we're lying down under the covers and I'm holding you. Think maybe that could happen? For hours?"
"Perfect." Angel kicked off his shoes, not really caring about the rest right now. Except for the coat which he tried to shrug off without doing too much damage to his shoulder.
"Thank you." Angel pressed a kiss to her forehead. Once the coat was off he lay down on the bed. Sean settled in between him and the wall. Angel made sure to lie on his right side so that Callisto could rest against that arm and not have to worry about hurting him.

He closed his eyes, savoring her warmth and scent and nearness.
He drifted off to sleep, his mind still swimming at the strange idea that he could be cared for.
