I don't see why we need to have a Ball anyway. If it's not compulsory I'm going to stay in Gryffindor if I can, I mean, it's not like I have to go this time.

It's optional, right?

You're going. And Ron is, too.

I knew you were going to say that.

Why? It's only a ball.

Do you have any good reason not to go?

Because I don't want to.

Why not? It couldn't hurt. You don't have to dance if you don't want to, but you ought to go.

Why?

Because you can't just be antisocial all of the time, Harry. You may not like to dance, but that's not an excuse to hide away in the dorm instead.

I'm not being anti-social. I just don't want to go. And I never said I was going to hide in the dorm.

Why don't you want to go, then?

Maybe not in the dorm, perhaps, but hiding nonetheless.

Why do I have to have a reason?

Because not going is, yes, anti-social. You ought to spend time with people outside of class and quidditch practice besides Ron, Sirius, and me. What's the point in not going?

Fine. I'll go. Happy?

Yes, actually. It'll be good for you.

Leave him alone. If he doesn't want to go, he doesn't want to go. Perhaps he doesn't want to watch you play kissyface with Weasley. Or maybe the Christmas season is not the easiest time of year for him.

First, it's none of your business. Second, we're going as a group of friends. Third -- well, actually, there is a third, but it's even less of your business than the rest of it.

Right. You'll go as a group, then you and Weasley will get preoccupied, and Potter will sneak out and find someplace in the castle where no one can find him. And you won't even miss him.
