thank goodness for the younger brothers and sisters of my friends. high school kids really have their fingers on whats cool: cell phones, gadgets, politics. i was flicking around facebook this evening (keeping current), and say on one of my friends page that she was supporting two candidates: ned lamont and barack obama. and these guys have facebook pages!! this is really interesting, and another good reason for hiring gen xers and millenials. joe lieberman's page links to a flickr account. (so does ned lamont's)

i gave examples of facebook and flickr being used for libraries to connect and collaborate with patrons, and politicians are doing the same. facebook is really geared for the student in terms of profile areas and topical issues. but dopa would require that public schools and libraries restrict this software. granted one has to be 18 to vote, but mock elections happen at any age, and building awareness in teens is a great democratic tool. i think democrats especially would be interested in maintaining access to social software based on the who is using computers in public libraries. and again, education goes along way.

web 2.0, social software, politics, library
