I love Korean movies. I took a class about them a couple years ago and that is how I got started on them. And since I've been sick this week, I've been watching even more (thanks, jdramas!) and thought I should comment on them.
JSA: Joint Security Area is about the de-militarized zone between North and South Korea, and the soldiers from the respective countries who are stationed there. There's a violent incident and Switzerland is called in to investigate, because that's what Switzerland does I guess. But the truth behind the incident is more complex than it first appears... :o This movie is rather amazing and stars my husband Lee Byung-hun, who is about the hottest man ever. And Song Kang-ho, who is a fantastic actor and not bad-looking either. Go watch this movie.
Tell Me Something is a suspense/thriller/whatever about a serial killer who keeps leaving bags of dismembered body parts everywhere and the cop who's trying to stop him! :D
Untold Scandal is my new favorite movie because it's about aristocrats making bad choices. There's a big love polygon and lots of sexytimes. And it's based on Les Liasons Dangereuses which apparently inspired some other movies too. There's an awesome woman with a VERY long-term revenge plot against her husband. It involves her cousin getting her husband's concubine pregnant.
THE VENGEANCE TRILOGY, consisting of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy, and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance (aka Sweet Ms. Gumja), is freaking amazing. Mr. Vengeance is not quite as good as the other two, but it's there, so you could watch it if you wanted to. Oldboy is a fantastic mindfuck, even if you've been spoiled for the ending. Lady Vengeance was my favorite, because Gumja is one badass woman, and her prison buddies are all amazing. This trilogy contains TONS of bloody violence. I loved it.
Bungee Jumping of Their Own is BAD. DON'T EVER WATCH IT. SO MUCH HATE. Allow me to elaborate: some movies have bad endings, but sometimes a bad ending doesn't completely spoil the movie. You can just ignore it and be like "Okay, yeah, so that part at the end wasn't so great, but the stuff before it was fun!" NOT SO WITH THIS MOVIE. The ending is so awful that the rest of the movie is totally ruined, not that the rest of it was especially wonderful. I wanted to tear my eyes out after I watched this movie. Most of it was just really awkward, and then awkward some more, and that part with the spanking was kind of hot, but oh god so awkward. And then it tricks you. It tricks you into thinking that you are going to be rewarded for enduring all that awkwardness. You sigh contentedly and watch as the happy ending falls into place and then HOLY SHIT WHAT THE FUCK. WHAT THE FUUUUUCK. I am SO ANGRY about the ending of this movie. I want to punch everyone involved in its creation, including, unfortunately, Lee Byung-hun. And I also want to hug everyone who watched this movie thinking it was going to be progressive and came away feeling shocked and betrayed. This movie hurt me deeply and I think there should be a support group for it.
Addicted is a much, MUCH better Lee Byung-hun movie. You should watch it because he gets naked it's interesting. Plot-wise. You know. There's a woman who lives with her husband and his younger brother. Both brothers are in car accidents on the same day and end up comatose. The younger brother wakes up after quite some time, while the older brother is basically brain-dead, but it seems that the younger brother is possessed by the soul of the older brother...
Attack on the Pin-Up Boys is delicious crack. It stars Super Junior, the biggest boyband ever, and they're basically playing themselves in a movie about high school pretty-boys who are being attacked by a serial poo-flinger. It's insane.
The next K-movie on my list is The Good, the Bad, and the Weird starring Lee Byung-hun, Song Kang-ho, and some other guy. More on that later!
angry rants ahead,
i love movies
