It was basically his year this year. His stint in Poker Face, a Mel Brooks comedy, having emotional gravitas when he returned to Riverdale, and now potentially getting an Oscar nomination! Like damn that's good stuff.
Lemme clarify something real quick because apparently we're all still stuck in 2012 "your fave is problematic" tumblr. I know about the tweets. I've known since the information first dropped THREE YEARS AGO. You do not need to tell me as a gotcha anytime I post a gif of the guy.
He made fatphobic tweets in 2011 and people are not obligated to just forgive and forget. I am not sitting here saying he's a beacon of purity and ~unproblematic~. I think he's hot and a good actor. THAT'S IT.
I decided a long time ago that I will acknowledge when a fave was an asshole in the past, but it's not my job to cry at night about it every fucking night. He apologized, it was over 10 years ago, if people wanna be upset they have every right to. But it's not my job to have to worry about it every time I post a gif of someone. This applies to everyone.
Now, am I pissed that Matt Rife turned out to be a fucking moron and don't wanna follow someone like him anymore? Absolutely! But let's be real, in a sea of domestic abusers, rapists, and violent racists that are gonna pop up in their fancy suits at all these same events, I don't have the energy to act like Melton is anywhere near that level. If you wanna, go ahead, but fans are allowed to be excited at his success without having to write a disclaimer every single time. Lord I can't believe I even have to say this AGAIN.
I know we give men a lot of leeway, because someone like Hugh Grant can say he detested making a movie and it's met with "oh he's so cheeky", meanwhile Rachel Zegler breathes the wrong way and people want her burned at the stake. I absolutely get how annoying stuff like that is, because it is fucking stupid.
I'd like to think though that we can move on after someone's apologized for something tweeted over TEN YEARS AGO. Got people in ontd posts yelling "PEOPLE CAN'T CHANGE" and that's a weird way to think. I was obsessed with Jeremy Renner when I was 21, I sure hope people assumed I've changed since then.
You gotta watch him in this movie though. Like even I walked into the theatre forcing myself not to get too excited (although I was pretty excited lmao), not to hype him up too much, because I know I'm biased. But then two hours later I walked outta that theatre confirming oh yes he can act.
The way he carries his body in the movie like a 13-year-old who was basically stuck at that age. No wonder people are praising him for that. One thing I also noticed, he gained some weight for the role, but nothing really major. You can still tell it's HIM and he changes so much in his body movements. The way he keeps citing Heath in Brokeback as one of his inspirations too aww bestie.
It's so funny, maybe I had some sort of inkling about this growing up watching him in Riverdale. Because it is so weird how much they ignored REGGIE MANTLE in the show. And when he finally got some good writing I was like "I dunno... something's happening here... he's doing so good". I'm literally just thinking about the episode, FOUR YEARS AGO, when he's tearing up to Archie about how his dad treats him and that shit brought a lump to my throat. Now he may get an Oscar nomination??? Like holy shit!
So many people are shocked because he came from Riverdale but others are rightfully pointing out that there are plenty of actors like him that aren't bad, they just didn't get the chance to shine. Well I'm glad he's having his chance and I look forward to more of this Awards season.
And of course.......... he is so hot. I cannot dispute this. Actually, I mentioned Matt Rife behind the cut, and I'm glad he's gotten the sexy Squidward (derogatory) monicker now because NOOOOOWWWWW y'all see how hot Melton is huh??? Get in line! 😂

Since we're all stuck as the same person we were in 2013 apparently, I think my brain just always lodged that role at the back of my mind. I've long since stopped rereading the books every April, turning back to them once in awhile for random scenes. I did try this year though but got busy and if I'm being honest with you once you get to THAT scene in Gone Baby Gone you can't sleep for a good week (you know the one). So I read the three books and looked over snippets of the rest lol.
But anyway, it's so funny how since 2020 it was pretty hard justifying why he'd work as Patrick, although people were pretty nice about it all things considered lol. Having to cite Joseph as someone from the CW who almost got to play in a show as the same role. But now???? NOW??!?!?!?
Amy Ryan was nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars for her role in the 2007 Gone Baby Gone movie. Casey Affleck was nominated for the Jesse James movie in the same year and later has won one for Manchester By The Sea. That's not to say that if they're Oscar winners or nominees they're good and nobody else is. But it really is flooring me how Charles Melton may end up in lists with these people now.

I propose to Dennis Lehane... that he keeps his eyes on this shit. Alright? Just... take note dude. Take note.
