Meta and Appreciation for Vanessa Abrams from Gossip Girl

You know who's cute? Vanessa Abrams.
You wanna know why Vanessa Abrams is cute? Well I'm here to tell you.

I wanna point out the absolute worst thing she did on the show.
It wasn't stealing a letter. Because then she told Nate and took responsibility for it. In the same time when Jenny humiliated her and didn't take responsibility for it.
It wasn't her ~budding~ her nose in anything having to do with Blair, when half the time Blair was doing some illegal shit so she should be budding her nose in it.
It wasn't her wanting to give a goddamn speech because she worked hard to be given the chance to do so and not just assume it was entitled to her because of money. It's not her fault she has issues with her mom like uh every other character on the show does.

It was the Serena shit. When Vanessa, Jenny, and Juliet, who I dubbed as my ~unholy trinity~ because the plot finally prevented me from falling asleep during this show (and my god is Gossip Girl a boring show... like you don't realize it until later but JESus), went after Serena for.... I don't even honestly know anymore. For being Serena.
It was pretty harmless up until the drugging part. But that was all Juliet... who... got forgiven real quick.

BUT STILL. Vanessa did two things wrong. She ran off so she couldn't take responsibility. Then when she came back she made a pseudo-apology and was annoyed that Dan didn't automatically forgive her. That was stupid.

Before that though? She got waaaaay too much flak for the slightest thing she could do. For simply existing in the show without a shaved head. She was what was wrong with the show, not the fact that Chuck's minor role in the books was expanded heavily and his abusive tendencies continually romanticized. Oh no it was Vanessa and her hair.

Cut the crap people. Vanessa is cute. Vanessa was one of the few characters who actually gave a shit about what she wanted to do in life. It's odd to me how everyone else, save for maybe Jenny, expected things handed to them, and somehow got in these prestigious colleges without us ever seeing them in a classroom... but when Vanessa works hard to get what she deserves she's seen as a leach who shouldn't breathe next to the Upper East Siders.
Because you know what? Fuck the Upper East Siders. This show could've done a good job of calling out classism but went for the most superficial storytelling instead. So a lot of Chuck's romanticization and Vanessa's depiction is on the show's part. Like 70% of it. Definitely. I get that much, but if I can grow from that a lot of people should be able to as well. It shouldn't be said repeatedly how Jenny being told she could only stay with Chuck is rape by coercion, you should know this by now.

But I digress. I'm talking about Vanessa.

There's nothing wrong with not knowing what you wanna do, but it was nice seeing someone like Vanessa, who didn't have all the money in the world, rise above the occasion and go after what she was passionate about. Vanessa had great style and charisma. If anything I wish they'd have expanded on her home life more, but who am I kidding these writers were awful enough.
My fanfic rec is to read this phenomenal crossover tying some shit up if you don't hate Vanessa but also oddly have a soft spot for that silly lil movie called This Means War.

Vanessa deserved better than these writers and this fandom. Simply type in the character's name on youtube and you'll know what the fuck I'm talking about. If I knew how to make vines my God would she get so much more love.

I really don't know how to conclude this. Vanessa and by association Jessica, deserved better. She's a better character and actor than we give her credit for and I wish more people would appreciate her.

we love the women that fandom hates, recap: gossip girl
