Act Your Age (Five + One)

1.

Sherlock had been startled out of his rant when John had handed him a coloring book and a box of crayons.

“What is this?” He’d demanded.

“It’s for coloring.” He decided it was better not to antagonize John over something so trivial. So Sherlock flipped through the book and had just gotten a crayon out to color the whale when it had hit him.

“That’s it!” The book went flying and the crayons rolled all over the floor, “She’s a teacher! That was the connection. Little Jeremy’s coloring book!” Sherlock grabbed his coat and rushed out the door. John wondered how his plan had gone so spectacularly wrong.

2.

“You’re not leaving the table until you finish your veg.”

“That’s ridiculous.” Sherlock stood to leave. John sent him a warning look.

“Sherlock. You will come back to the table. You will sit down and you will eat your veg with a fork.” Sherlock sat back down in his chair with a thump. John had never scolded him like that before. It made Sherlock want to see how far he could push John.

For the rest of the week Sherlock left his bed unmade. He went into John’s room and made a mess of his flat mate’s things. He took the batteries out of the remote and didn’t eat any vegetables. John scolded him each time and each time Sherlock took things one step further. Sherlock wouldn’t admit it but he was disappointed when John stopped reacting.

3.

“This is important, Sherlock.” John said exasperated.

“This is silly, John.” Sherlock rolled his eyes.

“It’s safety. You have to look both ways for cars before you cross the street.”

“I’m not going to get hit by a car.”

“You won’t if you follow the rule.”

“And if I don’t?”

“Then I’m going to have to hold your hand.”

John was confused when Sherlock didn’t protest. He even held out his hand for John to take. Somehow, John thought, he’d made a mess of the punishment thing.

4.

“Do you have to use the loo?”

“No, John.”

“It’s a long drive and we won’t be able to stop along the way. So you should get it out of the way now.”

“I appreciate your concern, but I do not.” John’s plan finally seemed to be working. Sherlock looked annoyed. Perhaps now he would consider his behavior.

“I do.” Their driver chimed in. “Can I use yours?” The moment was ruined. John sighed and showed the man inside.

5.

“What are you doing Sherlock?”

“I’m sitting in my chair.”

“That isn’t yours. You’re over at the kiddy table.” John smirked when Sherlock turned away.

Sherlock had to admit he had his own misgivings when John had first suggested the arrangements, but children are so much more interesting than adults. He was explaining the coagulation of blood to an interested five-year old. Her older brother was starting to turn green, but Sherlock wasn’t concerned with that.

1.

“John. I didn’t think I’d have to have this conversation with you but I must insist that you stop talking to strangers.” John was flabbergasted.

“What?”

“It isn’t safe. You’re supposed to refuse to get into a car with a stranger. Especially if they offer you sweets.”

“Yes but.”

“Yet you continue to risk your own wellbeing.” Sherlock paused to look John in the eyes, “I can only assume that no one has told you the dangers inherent in such acts.”

“Sherlock.”

“I’m glad we’ve had this talk.” Sherlock said smugly. He turned from John to pick up his violin and began to play.

John Finds Sherlock's Diary

John had just decided to try reading his new book in the unusual quiet time he had been given. He went to the sofa but when he sat down it was on something hard. He shifted just enough so he could reach the object and pulled a book with a cartoonish bee on the cover out from under him. John stared at it.

It was yellow and blue and looked like a child’s notebook. John was intrigued so he settled down into the sofa and opened it. The first page had “Property of _____” printed on it but the person who owned the notebook hadn’t filled in his or her name and had instead written “ME.” John chucked and turned the page.

The diary looked like it belonged to a child and even had scribbled pictures in the margins. It detailed the adventures of “THE BEST DETECTIVE EVER” and his “BEST AND GREATEST FRIEND” who fought crime and saved the day. After reading the first few pages John decided to flip through the book so he could look at the pictures. There were pictures of Chinese food, and coats, and knives, and body parts, and an evil umbrella. John continued to flip through the pages until he saw pictures of bees on the last page with writing. He decided to stop and read.

“…and THE BEST DECTECTIVE EVER and his BEST AND GREATEST FRIEND decided it was time to retire and to move to Sussex where they would keep BEES.”

He had just finished the last page when Sherlock walked in. The detective stared at John and the book in his hands. He opened his mouth to comment but John interrupted him.

“I thought that the ending was lovely.” He said defending the book, “I especially enjoyed the picture with the main characters holding hands while surrounded by the bees.”

John didn’t know why Sherlock seemed to turn a bit pink at his words, but he decided it was best to leave the room before Sherlock recovered from whatever had stopped him from speaking.

“I’m just going to make some tea.” John said and quickly left the room.

He didn't see Sherlock gently close the book and carefully put it away on the bookshelf.
