Rock and Roll Saves Lives

“Put music to our troubles and we’ll dance them away.” - Aaron Weiss

Everyone needs something in order to survive. Of course, there are the obvious things like food, water, and oxygen. We need these to physically live. But there is something more. There’s always going to be something extra for everyone. I think that the weasels had another necessity beside the obvious: water, food, oxygen. Pride. If you think about it, the weasel has nothing. Its purpose is to collect food and eat to survive. Nothing more. When the eagle attacked the weasel it held on until death, nearly defeating the eagle. The weasel want to let every other thing around them know that they are better than them and they do so by never giving up on it, even if it means dying for their cause.

Like the weasel I myself have something that is necessary for my living other than food, water, and oxygen. This certain something can cause emotion and can start catharsis. It can make me angry and at the same time can release my anger healthily. Music is the one thing that makes life worth living. It showers my mind with ideas on ways to live my life and how to think outside the box. People put their heart and soul into every note played and every word sung. To me, it lets me almost feel what the performer or writer of the song was feeling at the time.

When I was in eighth grade I was diagnosed with depression. While I held my true emotion, I could always listen to or write my own music to deal with the problems. Eventually I joined a band and soon learned that other people felt the same way I did. They could relate to the song I wrote and the way I felt. Without music I may not be alive today.

When stress comes around to haunt me I pull my guitar out and just strum away. Every problem in my life is non existent when I am playing that guitar. Music has either gotten me through or given me everything in my life. Music got me through years of school, arguments with friends, girlfriends, and family. It has also given me some of the best friends in the world along with something to aspire in.

In September 2007, I will be attending a college that will teach me how to record music so that I may pay it back for all that it has done to me. I will provide a new generation of people just like me with music to get through anything standing in their way. Recording music will provide me with the obvious necessities (food, water, oxygen) and that something extra that has saved my life and will save many others.
