dear god, I've become a hippy

So, as mentioned, I recently changed my diet a little. However, I soon realised a couple of things:

1. I don't like cooking
2. I really don't like tofu.

Looking at "easy, honest!" tofu cooking instructions just about drove me nuts.. soak it? squeeze it out? This is not simple food. Plus, you know, by default tofu is kinda disgusting.. unless ( Read more... )

Interestingly, I used soy milk on my breakfast for about two weeks.. until my body gagged, and just wouldn't take it any more. That surprised me, but maybe it was picking up on that toxicity you talk of.

Currently I have no soy at all in my diet.

I believe I'm lactose intolerant (as, theoretically, are 70% of people). It's noticeable (bad) when I do have it, so I choose not to.

As for "being an omnivore"? Well, that's your opinion. I'm not disagreeing, all I'm doing is running an experiment to see how I feel. I trust my body & I pay very close attention. If I start craving a juicy steak you can be damn sure I'm going to go out and get one. However, if I feel better not eating any meat, well, I'll stay that way. Time will tell.

Firstly, it's personal experiment. Everybody's body is different. You've obviously run your own experiments, so know what's best for you - which is great. So many people don't, and just eat whatever is there, with no thought at all. The fact that you've thought this stuff out puts you ahead of most people.

Secondly, I'm not dictating to anyone else what they should be doing. That's their choice.

Part of why you feel better without industrial farm meat is you're no longer getting massive doses of the chemicals crammed into the animals to keep them alive in those conditions, mainly growth hormones, antibiotics, and various other chemicals which unfortunately stays in the meat, milk, and eggs when it gets to you. You're not supposed to be full of that, thus it makes you feel crappy if you eat it. Its not a surprise, and if Australias FDA is like the USA's, well I know they take bribes, organize the laws to ignore the crimes, and look the other way "for the public good". I can't afford organic meat as much as I'd like, but I am much less squicked out when I eat it than I am with the industrial meat. The EPA says you should avoid any processed meats, any nitrated meats (as the nitrates are powerful toxins, like eating formaldehyde), and the US EPA used to list some 50 known endocrine disrupters. One of the nasty and common ones is called Plasticine, which makes plastics flexible/durable. Its very commonly used in soda bottles, plastic coatings in tin cans your food comes in, milk jugs, microwave safe containers, etc. The nasty part is the stuff leaches out from those water bottles we all use and floats around in our blood, making us sick and eventually damaging our kidneys and exiting into our urine, thereby killing the frogs in the waterways because the EPA isn't required to mandate this chemical's removal from water prior to release by treatment plants. Ergo, you're getting this in your system from drinking water too. There's also all those chemicals being concentrated into water on the Murray River (that's the one you get water from, right?) thanks to the heavy recycling required to keep the crops irrigated and the population from dying of thirst. I am pretty sure I mentioned before that Australia has some serious problems to face thanks to persistent drought, and its high population is unsustainable thanks to historic drought problems. I did say that, didn't I?

Hehe.. the drought here isn't a surprise, no. It's well talked about (by you, me, everyone else).

Water clarity/health is an issue anywhere, but particularly big cities.. and yeah, here too. Not keen on buying bottled water (doesn't seem to be any benefit to it), but filtration is.. complicated. Not any easy answers. Only drink coke? Heh.

NZ's 'FDA' isn't much like the USAs, so I'm much happier eating plain old cows here than I would be in the states (actually, I didn't eat any beef while I was in the states because I'm not happy with what I've read) - sheep & cows definitely aren't industrially farmed, so if Si went veggie while he was still in NZ, that wouldn't be the reason.

Re: the soy thing
I'm pretty dubious about the soy fertility thing, basically because all the large populations of people who eat a lot of soy actually seem pretty healthy (and aren't infertile etc). If something more conclusive comes out, I'll look into it more.

And umm, I do like mah soy...
It's like, potatoes, or pasta. Hard to dislike because it's just-add-flavour. The texture-dislike makes sense then, though it does exist in many textures. Basically it's stodge, but it's versatile, tasty protein stodge. I like just being able to throw some veges with some tofu & miso, and lo, soup.
