yesterday night I was sitting at the top having a beer with a friend and a few aquiantances. I glanced over to see five men walking by arguing. Then three of them turned on the other two and started fistfighting. The three on one side of the fight picked up one of the two on the other side and slammed him onto the hood of a nearby car. They then proceeded to punch and kick him in the face and stomach. His friend reached in to pry the men off, so they then turned on him, sucker punching him in the face and knocking him to the ground, where they kicked him repeatedly in the face and stomach until he was lying there motionless. Then a girl sitting at the table next to us jumped up and got in between the brawl. She yelled "HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO ANOTHER HUMAN BEING? STOP THAT! STOP!" They tried to get around her but at this point my friend was calling 911. They realized the police would be there soon and took off. Everyone at the bar got up to help the injured man lying on the ground. Five patrons carried him to a seat and tended to him until the ambulance arrived. The rest of the group explained to the police what had happened and described the assailant's physical features. Everyone expressed their anger that people actually did these things to eachother and made sure that the person sitting down, now conscious again, was alright. The man's friend, who he risked life and limb to save from the brawl, grabbed the car keys from his barely lucid friend and took off. Complete strangers, on the other hand, made no haste in helping him. That is why the pseudo-culture we call indie really is better than the rest of humanity. They call us snobby. They call us hubristic. They can call us anything that they want to, because any other crowd of people would have left that man lying in the street bleeding to death. I think I get why I am who I am after all of this. I think I understand why I choose to hang out at certain bars with certain people and do certain things. We actually give a shit about humanity. So fuck all of those people who belittle us. I think, using this event as simply an example of our social philosophy, we deserve to be cocky about who we are.
