It's both disheartening and disappointing to see the media hysteria over the recent high-profile suicides of Anthony Bourdain and Kate Spade. I recognize that in the past societies needed to find a way to perpetuate the species, and stigmatizing suicide was one way to accomplish that goal. But that was then and this is now. To throw the blanket of "mental illness" over anyone who chooses self-termination is draconian holder from bygone days. And yet, that's the first label assigned to anyone who commits suicide these days.
I'm not ignoring that there are people out there who are not of sound mind to be making life-altering decisions for themselves. Were Boudain and Spade mentally ill, however? I have no way of knowing, but I'd be inclined to doubt it. Rather, I suspect that each had reached a point in their lives where they felt like going forward was no longer a viable option. And whatever their reasons were for their decisions, they had the right to do so.
Their absence from our society is a shame, but who are we to say that Boudain and Spade were mentally ill for doing what they did?
