Tea with the Selkies

Jan 23, 2010 22:44

Gaheris has done his best to clean up the house a little prior to having anybody over, mostly because he has an irrational desire to please Kit and Christie both--at first he takes down the pictures, then remembers Kit's interest in them, especially the selkies and Morgause. He'd really rather leave the latter obscured, but he puts them all back up ( Read more... )

The twins turn up early in the afternoon, looking very put together in a retro sort of way; Kit is wearing her best day dress, and has made Christie comb his hair. She stands back, hands clasped demurely behind her back, while he knocks.

They have, of course, conferred beforehand, and discovered that Christie's present is Kit's artist. It's like the Gift of the Magi, only creepier.

Not only has he brushed that mop of his, he's put a vest on over his shirt and everything is buttoned in the proper way. Kit only had to make that face once to get her brother to comply--spoke volumes about his enthusiasm to visit the Nexus dwelling Scot again.

He knocks. Knock, knock knocks because once is not enough and thrice is maybe too many but by then it's become fun to beat out some sort of cadence so he continues.

"Oh, hey." He opens the door on the fifth or sixth knock, wiping green paint on his brand-new jeans before he thinks. "Great, you came. Uh, come on in."

"Hello, how are you? You didn't tell me you'd already met--" Kit swirls in as though she owns the place, beaming at him.

"Shame on you for not telling me you knew my sister." And yes, he's pinching Gaheris' cheek at he greets the man, even chucks him under the chin for good measure. Then he's at Kit's heels and grabbing for the back of her dress. "Your artist is a sneaky thing, sister dear."

Her artist. See that? They own him already.

"Oh, I didn't know, or I would have." He gestures at the laid-out table. "I made tea."

"Isn't he thoughtful? Look, it's like a party. I ought to have brought presents--"

"We brought us." Tea is always appreciated and in return, "Maybe we can..." Christie quirks his eyebrows and mimes a death face for Kit's benefit. Thank their host by trying to kill him. Lovely. "After. Hm?"

"There's fish, too, I don't know what you're used to but I got some salmon," running his hand through his hair again. "I hope it's fine enough."

"How lovely." Kit plumps down on the box bed, for lack of sufficient chairs, and pats the spot next to her. "I can't think of anything nicer."

Normally, he would take the seat next to his sister but manners, manners. Gaheris can have the honor. Christie will sit in a chair and try to not put his feet any place improper. "You've pant on your pants."

"Oh, fuck, I do. Sorry. I was working on something when you came." He hesitates, then sits down next to Kit.

"Really, what is it? Can we see?" Despite her effusions, she seems much more interested in Gaheris than in the tea, watching him with bright eyes.

"Yes, yes...can we see?" He takes on his twin's tone and expression, though he lean in towards the man and putting a uniquely Christie spin on the plea. "What are you doing?"

Gaheris runs his damaged hand through his hair again. "Hope you don't think it's forward. --I mean, it's you. I was painting you. Portraits."

The resemblance is a little startling, in fact -- they're one of those pairs who don't look particularly related until you see them side by side, and then it's as though there's no difference at all, except that Christie's eyes are dark as his sister's are pale. "Oh, what fun! We've never had our portraits painted, have we?"
