"Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both."- Benjamin Franklin
I don't know whether to laugh or go on a rampage when I read the newspaper nowadays. It's all completely absurd, especially since every morning I keep reading about how its neck and bleedin' neck between Obama and Clinton in the Democratic dickwaving competition. Why do I call it dickwaving? Simple: the Democratic party has successfully created the political equivalent of a flame war between the two campaigns. People spitting back and forth about how Clinton is the more experienced leader and how Obama is less corrupted and more levelheaded.
Let me clarify something: I like Barack Obama. I think he's a fantastic individual, and I honestly have not had an elected official fill me with hope and optimism since Bill Clinton. However, I am also acutely aware of this fact: Obama is a politician, just like Hilary and just like McCain. What optimism I have may well be crushed if he is elected President, but at the same time, I still have some hope. Unlike the 2004 election, where it seemed to be one had to make a choice between the lesser of two evils, I honestly want Obama to win the nomination, and the Presidency, because I believe he is the best person for the job. I could not ask for more in the last eight years than that.
My problem with the primaries is goddamn measuring act Barack and Hilary keep participating in. At least the Republicans made up their mind: their choices were two religious twats with ridiculous names and a conservative that occasionally made an ounce of sense *coughRonPaulcough*, so they chose Grandpa Simpson...what the fuck? The really sickening thing is I genuinely don't believe every vote counts. The electoral college is the system that keeps the status quo in check.
Why did Ron Paul get buried in the caucases other than being something of a obscure individual in the political ring? His policies- one of which is the end of the War on Drugs. Who would get affected most by that? The CIA, the DEA definitely, pharmaceutical companies, law enforcement agencies, and the prison systems. Naturally they would want him painted as a wacko, because if the American Drug War ends, a lot of those groups would lose a lot of funding.
The CIA- No drugs= no deniable black budget, no way to assist US allied rebel and government groups, no funding of wetwork operations.
The DEA- Would not need to exist at all, considering they're basically useless anyway.
Big medicine- In all likelyhood, the legalized narcotics would now be the preferred method of treatment for many patients in the US, and they would possibly be government regulated, keeping them from price-gouging.
Law enforcement and corrections- Vice cops all but eliminated of their specific necessity (although they would probably be transferred to other units), and prisons would gradually lose inmates due to no prosecution of former drug crimes, putting some guards out of a job (so fuckin what?).
The point I'm trying to get across is that even the people we hope for to come save us from the same crap we've dealt with for nearly a decade will still have to dance along the lines of whoever decides to give them the title of President of the United States of America. It scares the hell out of me that the people of this once truly exceptional nation have decided to just let this all slide. Abraham Lincoln predicted that one day the government and big business would be in bed together, and he was right. What's more frightening is that its not just them, its special interest groups and the Military-Industrial Complex.
Do the La-li-lu-le-lo exist? I don't like to think so, but its not impossible. The fact that their are people who believe the murder of generally innocent people is made moot or in some way deserved because of their sexual orientation is proof that with the human race, their is no such thing as impossible.
