Jay Walkin

Dec 10, 2008 22:14

there's a moment most mornings when I am going to work.
I emerge from the subway and I walk up the street toward 9th avenue.
At a certain point I have to cross from the North to the South side of the street.
I often do this diagonal jay walk mid-block as the traffic isn't usually bad there.
I do this so I can see the sky.
I see down this canyon of brick steel glass and concrete to the sky the horizon, the River and even New Jersey.

Its in this little moment I'm filled with an urge to run. I want to hurl my bag to the ground and run as fast as I can. sprint until my legs burst.

I want to hurl myself into the air I don't want to fly I just want to defy gravity just for a moment and embrace the sun and the sky and hold there for as long as god and all that is holy lets me, until gravity takes me back to earth and I crash to the ground, or water, or who knows maybe even Hoboken.

Its usually about his time a Fed-ex truck or a pink hippo comes through the intersection and works its way toward me and I continue on my walk across the street.

Its a maybe 2-3 seconds of my day tops, but its still maybe the best 2-3 seconds of my day :-)
