Two men died Saturday morning in the crash of an ultralight plane in southeastern Pasco County.

The men are a father and son, Taylor Tedesco, 17, and Nick Tedesco Jr., 46. Nick Tedesco was a fire chief with Hillsborough County Fire Rescue.

Nick Tedesco was a 25-year veteran of Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, hired in 1981. He was promoted to captain in 1987, and was the captain of the ladder company at Brandon's Fire Station 11 on C-Shift. He is survived by his wife, Maureen, and their younger son.

"It's a tragic loss," said ultralight pilot Clyde O'Donnell. "We've lost two people that have become a big part of our community here, flying in and out of here, and unfortunately one of them a very young person. It hurts us all and it affects us all."

The airplane went down in a swampy, heavily wooded area in Crystal Springs, east of Paul Buchman Highway, also known as Highway 39. The site of the crash is close to the Polk County and Hillsborough County borders.

The plane had taken off from the Blackwater Ultralight Center in Hillsborough County.

An eyewitness saw the plane fly over and shortly afterwards heard a crash and called 911. The cause of the crash has not been determined.

The sheriff's office received the call shortly after 9 a.m., but it took

emergency responders more than 30 minutes to find the plane and its occupants.

"It's in a heavy thicket area near fire breaks," said Lt. Sandra Reed from the Pasco County Sheriff's Office. "Growth is head high out there so it's difficult to traverse."

The National Transportation Safety Board is expected to arrive early next week to look at the plane and the engine.
