The one with Rockstar Season 2

So last year, I watched and quite enjoyed the show Rockstar: INXS. This year, the show is back, but with a different band: Rockstar: Supernova (official site - warning: lots of Flash!). For those of you who have never seen it, it's a reality TV show where 15 candidates battle it out to become the new lead singer of the band. Last season it was for INXS, this season it's for the new band Supernova, consisting so far of Tommy Lee (Motley Crue), Gilby Clarke (Guns N' Roses), and Jason Newsted (Metallica). I guess it is a little bit like shows such as American Idol. Except that on Rockstar, the contestants sing and play songs that I actually like, instead of the American Idol/Pop Star/X Factor stuff I very much do not like.

So anyways, I can't watch the new season on TV because I don't have Sky, but I've been downloading the eps. That means I'm at least a day behind, so I try to stay spoiler free for who was kicked off. That's the sole reason I hadn't visited the official site yet, and the sole reason I didn't really know who were on the show.

Then last week, someone mentioned something about a Dilana on the show. That name made me think of a singer I know, Dilana Smith, but like, she did pretty well in Holland for a bit, so surely it's not her. Then I hear somewhere else that Dilana is from Africa, and that made me curious enough to look her up. And what do you know - it's the same Dilana! She's dropped the Smith off her name, and she's resurfaced in Houston, Texas.

When I was a freshman in college, about 5 years ago now, I bought her album Wonderfool, a recommendation by a friend of mine. I listened to it, and LOVED it. It pretty much became my soundtrack for that year. I murdered the album...played it over and over. I don't think it left my discman for months on end. I still absolutely love it. The lyrics, the music, her voice...it would totally be amongst my top 10 favorite albums of all time.

So imagine my surprise to see her on Rockstar! I don't think her album did too badly in Holland, I even remember seeing the video for Do You Now played on MTV quite a lot. She kind of dropped off the face of the earth after that....but still. It's weird seeing a singer I love loads appear on a show like Rockstar like she's never been famous!

I was also a bit worried she'd suck, but luckily my worries were unfounded. So far, I have seen the first 3 episodes, and she rocked in every single one. I know I may be bias, but I think she's easily the best singer and performer on the show. She looks comfortable on stage, she has the intensity needed to captivate an audience, and she is one of the contestants who actually look and act like they really love rock music, not like it's some sort of stage act. I hope she wins, she totally has my vote. :)

Also, in other pop-culture related news: I am finally catching up on watching season 1 of Veronica Mars. I know, I'm way late, but I am finally starting to see why so many people like it. Anyways, in one of the recent episodes I watched, we meet the character of Mac, computer geek, who helps out Veronica on a case. In the first scene we see her in, she is wearing a T-shirt I bought nearly two years ago in LA! That sort of thing has a history of happening to me. :P Just made me laugh!
