Character name: Matthew Gravesend Character journal: whoisthatchild Species: Human Age: Ten White or Black?: Matthew has a Black Soul, which results in every action he takes being fundamentally against human nature-even if he has no intention of it being that way, all his actions are technically sins. Even such things as breathing count, because they keep him alive, and it's against human nature to want Matthew to be alive. He is basically a big ball of wrongness, inherently inhuman in nature but still human in flesh.
But this is the complicated part. Whilst everything he does should get him a black mark because humans aren't meant to be what Matthew is, the fact that he does have a Black Soul means that everything he does is supposed to be evil and counter to the norm of humanity. So doing anything that should net him a black mark would mean he'd also get a white mark for performing that sin in the first place. So theoretically, his karma may well be perfectly balanced-if you think not, it would be perfectly black. To quote his older self, he's like the zero beside the one in ten; zero isn't a real number since you can't have zero of an object, but it is functioning as a value in ten. Thus the zero in ten, like Matthew, is a contradiction of natures.
But I should mention that ultimately it's a moot point in the first place, because Black Souls do not go to any afterlife at all. Whilst Matthew thinks he's destined to go to hell from birth, the truth is that a Black Soul is reduced to complete nothingness and erased once it leaves the mortal plane. No chance of anything else, no matter how his life turns out. In his canon, the various judges of people's place in the afterlife mostly think of that as being extremely sad but necessary, since they'd just ruin any afterlife they went to. Of course, Eiki can feel however you want her to about it, if you even want her to know at all.
...Wow, sorry that was such a nonsensical mess, it's just that Matthew is meant to be really morally confusing, and I think I did too good a job.
Past sins and deeds: Matthew has one one hand, cursed a collection of children at Christmas, lied endlessly about his nature and to get his own way, consorted with and even owns monsters that are the enemies of humans, operates a dungeon filled with said monsters, profited from the murders of others (by taking and making use of their corpses) and broken the fingers of children to get them to fight him some more. On the other hand, he's very polite, generous and friendly and actually very good to the people he likes, giving them presents and going out of his way to make them happy. He's also hard working and extremely dutiful, and has performed nice little deeds. For evil little reasons. Cleansed Crystal Mirror, yes or no?: Sure, she can look at anything Matthew does if it comes up. Lecture material: Really, considering all the above confusing nonsense I've subjected you to, the only real thing I can think of that Matthew can be certainly be lectured on is that he doesn't put any value on himself, and ends up getting hurt because he takes unnecessary risks. He's also a little too curious and nosey.
