Sweatin’ with Andy Bernard
Kelly sits in the break room, picking over her honey walnut salad, and glancing longingly at the salty crackers and chips in the vending machines. Andy bursts into the room, distracting her attention. “Ahh, just the woman I was looking for.” He sits his paper bag in front of her and plops down into the chair next to her, his tie swinging wildly. “I pulled out the last of my Girl Scout cookie stash from the freezer this weekend. Samoa or Thin Mint?”
Kelly bites her lip, but shakes her had. “I can’t.”
“But you love Girl Scout cookies!”
“I know, and I still think the Girl Scout cookie ice cream is an outrage, but I…I’m not in the mood today.” She pushes her chair back, standing up to go.
“Not in the mood for the subtlety of mint wrapped in chocolate or the melding of chocolate, caramel, and coconut?”
“I just...I’m trying to lose weight, okay? I’m going to the beach in a month and I’m nowhere near ready for swimsuit season! And I found the cutest bikini last weekend. It’s pale pink and it has white polka dots and fake little string ties on the sides.”
Andy’s mouth is hanging open, but when she looks down at him, he chomps into a cookie, swallowing quickly. “You know, there’s a really fun, new way to lose weight?”
She frowns. “Is it that new pineapple diet? Because I read about that in Jane and it didn’t sound very effective.”
“No, it’s right here in Scranton.”
“Really? Is it that new striptease class down at the Y?”
“Wha…strip…what?”
“Striptease class. It’s supposed to be really good cardio.”
“Have you….have you…?”
Kelly shakes her head and tries not to roll her eyes. Andy’s such a boy sometimes. “Not yet.” Andy doesn’t say anything for a minute, so she asks again: “So what’s this new way you were talking about?”
“Oh.” He beams. “I happen to know the perfect cardio coach.”
“Who, who?” Kelly clings to Andy’s arm in anticipation.
“Moi!”
“What?”
“Yeah! Just tell me what kinds of stuff you like to do and we’ll come up with days that work for both of us. I have the perfect stereo set-up for some heart pumping tunes and we’ll get our cardio onnnnn.”
Kelly doesn’t know how this could work. “But you’re not even certified or anything.”
“I worked at the gym on campus at Cornell for three years.”
“Did you teach any classes?”
“Well, no, but I saw plenty of them to know what I’m doing. Trust me.”
“I don’t know. I just have to make myself go to the gym.”
“But it’s so much easier to lose weight if you have someone to work out with. Not that you need to lose any. I think you’re perfect.”
Kelly feels the smile pulling at her cheeks. “Well, thanks, but…bikini? It’s totally necessary.”
“Right, um, so what do you say?”
“Does your music selection include Beyonce?” Andy grins.
“Are you kidding? She’s like the goddess of hip hop meshed with pop.”
“Exactly! Andy, you’re the best! Oh, and I’ll take that cookie now.” She savors the samoa on the way back to her desk, figuring it will be the last tasty thing she eats.
Kelly’s had a lazy weekend at home, watching reruns of America’s Next Top Model, and re-reading this month’s Cosmo, which she picked up on a whim the last time she had to house sit for her parents. She’s normally a Jane girl, but one of the blurbs on the front cover had caught her eye as she stood in line at the store. “How to win your guy back: 15 ways to make him fall at your feet.” That sounded pretty good to Kelly at the time, planning to show up in New York, dressed to the nines, and making Ryan regret…well, everything. She hadn’t ever followed through on her plan, though, and to be honest, she’d been doing pretty well lately, hanging out with her friends from college and high school who were still left in the area, and Karen had turned out to be a pretty good shopping buddy.
Lately, she’d been hanging out with Andy a lot, though. She wasn’t exactly sure how it happened, but they had a lot of things in common. They’d run into each other at a bar about a month ago and Kelly had taken him out for some late-night Indian food to soak up the alcohol. They bonded over things Kelly didn’t think he would like: celebrity gossip and those addictive reality shows on Vh1 and MTV. Andy introduced her to Lost and Kelly convinced him to watch Ugly Betty so they could talk about it on Fridays. He was better than Ryan, that way. He complained about his bad dates to her and she lamented over the fact that Jim and Pam were so cute, and why couldn’t she have something like that?
She flips around and finds a marathon of season three Project Runway-she likes season two, but it’s a Sunday afternoon, and she doesn’t have anything else to do-but just as Laura and Jeffrey are getting into it, her cell phone rings. She stretches across the couch and smiles when she sees Andy’s name.
“Hey ya,” she answers.
“Are you ready to rummmmmble?” He announces and she has to hold the phone away from her ear for a second.
“Are you done?”
“Are you ready?”
“For what?”
“Sweatin’ with Andy Bernard. I thought we had plans.”
“Oh, yeah. I already went to the gym yesterday.” That was a lie.
“I don’t think so.”
“How do you know?”
“I just do. And even if you did, it can’t hurt to exercise again. It will only make you look better for that bikini in your closet.”
Kelly bit her lip, thinking it over.
“I promise it won’t be too painful.”
“What would we be doing, exactly? ‘Cause push ups and crunches and all that crap aren’t really my thing.”
“No, no, none of that. It’s Denise Siebers. Basic stuff.”
“Who?”
“Debbie Siebers. She’s only been a member of the fitness community for like 20 years. You’ll recognize her, probably.”
Kelly wants to ask why Andy has workout videos when he’s a guy, but instead she grudgingly agrees. She pulls on her cutest sweats-the ones from Victoria’s Secret that have PINK written across the butt-and heads over to Andy’s apartment. It’s a nice day outside, warm and breezy, and now she kind of wishes she hadn’t spent all afternoon on her couch.
Andy answers the door in a ratty t-shirt with an emblem announcing some fraternity event. He’s wearing red basketball shorts and thick white socks. Kelly’s never been past the entryway in his apartment, but isn’t surprised to see his living room furnished with a huge television and not much else.
He lifts his eyebrows at her. “You ready?”
“I guess.” She shrugs.
Andy turns on the music: “Love Shack” by the B-52s and starts the DVD. The exercises are simple enough, but she’s having trouble following the moves with the music up so loud. Andy notices and tells her to just watch him. This works better, rather than lifting her focus to the TV to her feet and back, she just shifts her line of vision up to watch Andy’s footwork. It’s clear he’s done this before. He barely falters. Kelly wonders if Andy’s a good dancer. Ryan would never dance with her, even in the privacy of their own apartments. Michelle Branch is blaring when she shouts, “We should take dance lessons!”
“Huh?” Andy’s too busy bopping his head to the music and marching in place to pay attention.
“Dance lessons.” She points to his feet. “You’re really good at this!”
“Thanks!” He grins over his shoulder, kicking out his right foot in front of him. “Kick! Arms up!” Kelly rolls her eyes, but obliges.
When they’re done, Kelly has to admit she does feel better. Andy offers her a Gatorade and she takes a long sip.
“So what were you saying about dancing?” He asks, patting his face dry with a towel.
“I’ve always wanted to take dance lessons. Not, like tap, but you know, with a partner."
“Oh.” Andy looks so hopeful, his eyes wide and his hair sticking up in odd places. She reaches over to brush down his bangs. “Um, yeah. I mean…are you…asking?”
“I think you’d be good at it. You seem to be coordinated.”
“Well, sure, as long as it doesn’t conflict with Lost.”
“Even if it does, I have Tivo.” She beams, triumphant.
“Okay then, if you insist.”
“Yaay!” She throws her arms around his neck and gives him a quick hug, when she pulls back, Andy’s face is awfully red, but it’s probably just from working out. “I’ll do the research when I get home. And thanks so much for this. You were right, you’re a really good teacher.”
“I try. I’m glad you had fun.”
Kelly picks up her things to go, but turns before she heads towards the door. “Same time tomorrow?” she asks and Andy looks pleased.
“You got it, m’lady.”
