Ron's eyes never strayed from Hermione as she first spoke to the group, warning them of what was to come, and then as she continued with that damnable request that should have been bloody well set on fire and Harry's final wishes forgotten.

Mentally reciting the letter with fingers tightly gripping the arms of the chair to keep his own swirling emotions in check, Ron could almost, almost transpose her soft contralto with Harry's voice, so young and certain of himself and the burden he placed upon the three of them. A burden that would still haunt and weigh them down like a heavy anchor long after this day.

Glancing to Ginny (who looked more like their mum right at that moment than he could have ever imagined), he nodded once, quite slowly, and stood to face the rest of the small group, hands now clenched into fists at his sides in resolute determination.

"It's the only choice we have left," he said somberly, and strode out in search of Hermione.

Penelope had sat passively, with her hands resting in her lap, as Hermione read out the letter. She had never known Harry particularly well - had treated him once or twice, but had never known him beyond her duties as a Mediwitch. She found herself frowning as tears pricked at her eyes, and could therefore only assume they were for Ron and for Hermione. Or perhaps it was simply human nature, to react to the dying words of another in such a way ( ... )

This was the last place Remus wanted to be at the present. He shifted uncomfortably in his seat. The events of the past week playing in his mind. Tonks coming to see him and ask him to take a position he knew he couldn't fill. Then... then Severus. Remus shifted again, only half paying attention to what was being said.

Then there was the magic word. Harry. Remus' head snapped up, swivelling to look at Hermione as she spoke. By varying degrees, he could feel his jaw drop open, staring at Hermione.

Harry... had done this?

Remus felt his stomach curl, having the sudden urge to want to bolt. Or vomit. Whichever came first.

His mind flashed back to his earlier conversation with Tonks. That they needed him. Given that letter, it was true. They were floundering. But when he went to raise his voice, he found the words died in his throat.

Instead, he stood, shoving his hands deep into his trouser pockets. There was no way he was going to be the first to speak. No way in hell.

"But... why?" Tonks said, voicing several questions in one. Why had he done it? Why were they just finding out about it now? Why did they think it would change anything?

Harry had always struck her as something of an enigma. She'd never quite been able to reconcile the legendary Harry with the real living breathing person. He seemed more like a series of stories and unlikely events than a real person, and those stories and events didn't always match up with the nice, normal boy she'd eventually gotten to know.

So if they did bring him back (ignoring for the moment the mad idea that they could or would do something like that), if they did, then what?

This wasn't a solution to their problems, it was just a whole new batch of problems.

Luna didn't look at Hermione while she spoke, but rather stared at a dirty pane of glass in the window beside her. She half glimpsed Hermione's reflection while the words tumbled out and threw themselves like little arrows at the group as a whole.

For the first time since arriving at the house, Luna felt like she was part of the group. She'd been asked by Hermione to join just moments before the letter.

"Ashes... ashes... we all fall down," she whispered before glancing at the others.

Hermione had left, Ron had followed. What a strange little group this was. Outside the clouds had turned dark and Luna felt that this was quite apt as now the room was storming with uncertainty.
