When Hermione first arrived at Hogwarts, she knew that no one else appreciated the knowledge that she'd gleaned from every single book she'd devoured prior to arrival. Her first couple of months were spent in a friendless state, hours upon hours of spare time in the Library, reading until near curfew about things she'd only ever dreamed of before.
It was in those first couple of months that she learned the history of Azkaban.
But that was nothing compared to standing in front of the looming prison, ocean surrounding them for as far as the eye could see. The darkness of the building and the cold frightening emptiness curled through the air like smoke. Hermione shivered as though she would never get warm again. Her hands curled tightly around the broomstick for a long moment and there was a little voice telling her to bolt. Bolt now and never return.
But she wouldn't listen to that voice. She couldn't. Hermione would never want anyone to just give up on her if she ever ended up here (heaven forbid) and so that meant Hermione would not give up on Katie, just like she didn't give up on Luna.
Hermione spent those first months at Hogwarts with little to no friends. Now was the time to prove that she hadn't forgotten those who had become her friends in the end.
With that, Hermione turned around to face the group of rescuers that had volunteered to be a part of this. Moody was sketching a layout and a few possible entry points in the sand with his wand. She listened as he instructed them on what to look out for.
