RIP Dimebag

1966-2004

Today (December 8th) marks the 2nd anniversary of the on-stage murder of Dimebag Darrell Abbott. For those of you who don't know (and that's very few of you) he was the guitarist for the band Pantera, and my personal hero. Out of all the musicians killed throughout history, Dime is the only one to be killed on-stage. Luckilly the fucker who did it was shot in the back of the head, with a shotgun, by a police officer.

The wake that his murder left on the metal scene though, will probably never, ever, heal. For one, Pantera litterally saved metal in the early 90's. When Metallica released the Black Album, and heavy metal was on a steady decline, Pantera came onto the scene with Cowboys From Hell, and saved a genre. Sure, there are bands that have revolutionized certian genres, but very, very few cna be credited with saving them. Pantera did.

Take this year for instance, at the Unholy Alliance Tour, durring Slayer's set-up, a giant picture of Dime was projected on a screen over the stage. Beers were flying, people cheering, over a picture, a metal saint. Suddenly they started playing Coybows from Hell over the PA and the place erupetd, over a song that wasn't even being played live. After that came Walk. I jumped in the pits...the closest thing I'll ever get to seeing a band that changed the way I view heavy music. I couldn't have been happier.

Two weeks later, Ozzfest 2006. They have the six string masterpiece art display. Dime signature guitars painted by fellow musicians who were inspired by Pantera's music. the guitars they had? Metallica, Slayer, Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson, Linkin Park, Anthrax, KoRn, Alice In Chains, a virtual who's who of metal stars, all who were inspired by Dime. Later in teh day, Aveneged Sevenfold covered Walk. Every single person stood up and together, we overpowered the PA. The crowd was louder than the band. the singer gave up and let us sing most of the song.ly Values, the guitars, and the songs over the PA durring Korn's setup.

Sure, certian musicians have made an impact on a genre once they die. But Dime, will never be forgotten. The Black Tooth's flow tongiht for ya, brother.

And I know, that he's up there with Cliff Burton and all the other metalhead's who have fallen in the line of duty...and there is one hell of a jam session I'd kill to hear right now.
