Kids are waaaaay more intelligent than most people give them credit for. Not experienced, but smart. The trick is that (from my experience) they are incredibly self serving and all of their burgeoning intellect goes towards getting what they want. They will constantly explore the boundaries of what they can and can not get away with.

Let me preface the next few paragraphys with "This is my opinion. I have no children of my own and understand that I'm like a born-parapalegic talking about how someone should be doing jumping jacks."

That being said, it is up to the parents to set the boundaries and concequences for crossing them.

Regardless of the type of punishment, the biggest complaints I've heard about were unfairness and inconsistency. The punishment should fit the crime. Getting a whupin for everything from dirty shoes to punching your sister doesn't really give a child an accurate moral map.
Also, having different punishments for the same crime or punishing irregularly just makes for confusion and frustration.

Kids are little sponges for knowledge and every single thing that a parent does gets filed away somewhere. That kid is probably going to go to school soon and start asking kids if they "Wanna settle it on the playground..." Meanwhile, I'm wondering why Daddy's so willing to lay the smack down on a stranger.
