"Between the idea and the reality, between the motion and the act, falls the shadow." T. S. Eliot
Kate had been afraid that she would feel more like she was visiting rather than coming home for a short stay when she'd gone topside. That was put to rest the moment she set foot inside Sanctuary again and it felt like home. The roots were still there, small though they were, they were strong. A couple of years ago and that would have freaked her out, but now, it was comforting. Will had also been true to his word and kept up calling Kate, Katie-cat through her protests and matching annoying nicknames. Only he'd also been correct in that it wasn't as annoying as it was in the beginning. Not that she'd admit to that. So many ties that she never thought she'd have, and the desire to have more taking deeper root. Or maybe, just maybe, this might be home.
The problem was, Kate's baggage was whispering doubts, casting shadows over what was and what might be. She'd readily accepted making the trip topside to give the latest rumors to Magnus partly because she wanted to come visit and partly to see if what she had with Will was more than the physical. It was one thing to have it out of sight of the others but another all together to shine a spotlight on it with the day to day of their world.
Kate tossed her bag of clothes onto her bed, then went in search of her friends. Memories tugged at her as she walked the halls until she came to Will's office and leaned on the doorjamb with a smirk. "What? No red carpet or welcome back party?"
