Character
Name: Oswald Schermer A.K.A War
Gender: Male
Age: Really old! He’s at least over 1000 years old, though he can’t quite remember his exact age. Physically appears to be in his late-twenties.
Wing Color: Bright blood red. It is an incredibly obnoxious colour, to say the least.
Physical Appearance: Despite him insisting his hair is platinum blond, it is not. Actually, it’s more like gray-silver. His eyes are a weird blood red colour, and he’s athletically built with a height of 5’9”. If he can help it, he’ll always be wearing something purple, if not in ridiculous amounts of it. His PB will be a recoloured Prussia from Hetalia.
History: Seeing he’s more or less been around as long as his universe has been, it’s unavoidable that its history has to be talked about as well.
Since the dawn of time, or something like that, deities have been hanging around the world, initially rather primitive and basic, independent from such things as “belief power” and so on. Despite being called deities, they didn't really make the universe; that would be their superior, a seemingly omnipotent collective being known simply as Heaven. The deities represented elements or concepts that made up the world, from the usual things like earth and fire, to more abstract things like time and destruction.
Oswald is one of those gods, and back in the day he was Destruction. In a sense, you could call those early days his equivalent of a childhood, though at best the memories are fuzzy. The only thing he can remember with certain clarity was that he broke lots of things, which is a given considering he was the god of destruction.
Then humans came along, an unexpected development that was nevertheless allowed to be because it didn’t seem like a bad idea at the time. Over time, the humans began to worship the things the deities represented - which in turn, started giving them tricky stuff like complex sentient thought and personality, and Oswald was no different. Suddenly, there was a thrill in breaking things - though he got bored of that quickly. He wanted a challenge, something that could fight back and put him on his toes.
Coincidentally, around this time humanity was getting the hang of warfare. Turns out that humans didn’t need any help starting wars with each other. And where there was war, there was destruction, so he found himself hanging out at the battlefields, normally unnoticed by most people unless he wanted them to see him, thanks to his godhood. Now, in those days there was a whole lot of fighting, which meant he ended up spending a lot of time watching people fight and kill. Obviously, he started joining in on the fighting and killing, disregarding which side they were on. It wasn’t as if he cared about them enough to want to root for any side, yeah? And humans were a lot more interesting to do battle with, since they could actually think and react. It also seemed that his presence tended to make soldiers more violent and on-edge.
…And thanks to him busying himself with warfare so much? He kind of had an identity crisis, because at some point he started confusing himself and Destruction just didn’t seem to fit anymore. For a long time, he alternatively called himself either Destruction or War, often changing between which one he used within moments, much to the annoyance of the other gods. Not that most of them liked him in the first place; his ego and bloodthirstiness were so great that he managed to rub everyone else the wrong way, save for the fire god, Azhar who was quite similar to him. In fact, he’s the only close friend Oswald has.
Then one day, shit hit the fan. Metaphorically, that is.
It started when the light goddess was found dead. Gods obviously being extremely hard to kill, fingers were pointed at the dark god immediately. He was always with her, after all, and he did not have a very good reputation with the other gods, Oswald included, so they did not trust him. Nor did he have any concrete evidence to back up his innocence plea. Heaven was especially not pleased with this, having considered the light goddess its favourite. But nonetheless, it didn't choose to punish the dark god the usual way - instead it sent him on a task to redeem himself. He would not be able to return to the celestial realm until it was completed. All seemed to be fine!
...Until the dark god realized that his task was in fact a fool's errand. To cut a long story short, it ended with a lot of people dead (several gods included), said dark god's soul doomed to reincarnate endlessly and wander the earth forever, and the remaining gods learning that this could have all been avoided if Heaven had not sent him out on an impossible task. Oh, it knew what would happen, but it did it anyway because it thought it would be amusing. Whatever resentment the others may have had for their boss shot up almost instantaneously, and they wanted to get back at it. Unfortunately, they had to settle on petty matters seeing their boss was omnipotent, which would inadvertently cause another very big, important thing for this universe, but that’s another story for another time.
So, while most of the gods were planning whatever it was they wanted to do? Oswald was stuck in his personal realm recovering. He had tried to take the dark god on by himself and got impaled with his own sword. While he managed to survive due to being very, very hardy and pain tolerant, it still hurt like a bitch. Unfortunately, there wasn’t much he could do about it except nurse the wound and wait for it to heal up. It would take him a long while before he recovered enough to be able to actually do much without feeling like his insides were ripping apart. Azhar would occasionally show up to keep him updated, entertained, and make sure he wasn’t doing something stupid, but for most of the part he was alone. Somewhere along the way, he settled on being War permanently.
Once that ordeal was over with, he immediately set about to catching up with ‘work’. Strangely enough, he gained an odd curiosity in human beings; where he once just hung around for the fighting, he found himself wandering into camps and observing the soldiers, fully taking advantage that most of them could not see him unless he wanted them to. Which lead to him being curious about what they did when they weren't tied up with going to war, and that lead to him to visit towns and such when he didn't have much to do. It made him realize exactly how much time he was wasting when he wasn’t off making wars worse, because for the first time he was actually experiencing something like a normal life, though admittedly he was later than some of the other deities in this. He took on the name Oswald Schermer as an alias, and henceforth led something like a double life - when he was on the job he was War, when he wasn’t and didn’t feel like going back home he was Oswald.
Some time later, the pantheon received two little godlings, as replacements for two deities (wind and lightning) who died during the earlier conflict. Oswald took a liking to them almost immediately, especially since one of them showed some admirable guts, and agreed to take care of them for a while when everyone else was too busy to do so. It was supposed to be a one-off thing! …Except he went and got attached to them. They were cute, bright kids, and he couldn’t help it. Soon enough, he was their primary caretaker and technical-parent. While well-meaning, Oswald was unsurprisingly a terrible role model to both Esta and Cielo. Despite being advised not to, he brought the two along with him whenever he was at the battlefield because he thought they should get an education in this sort of thing. In retrospect, it was probably a really bad idea on his part, seeing both of his kids are…a little messed up currently, possibly thanks to this.
Aside from all this, nothing of particularly major importance has happened to him. More fights, more scars, more hilarious pain, acquiring a taste for beer, getting topped by life over and over again, having something like a midlife-crisis. Good times.
And then being whisked away to Luceti and getting wings attached to his back. Ahaha.
Personality: First and foremost, Oswald is egotistic to the max. He firmly believes himself to be superior to most, if not everyone he meets, regarding himself as a higher being. Which, well, he technically is, though to most he’s not what you’d expect from your typical god. It's pretty obvious that while his ego isn't entirely undeserved, all things considered, he's got a deluded sense of self and his own strength. He’s not afraid to boast and be loud about it, which makes him come off as being obnoxious and absolutely full of himself. Obviously, a lot of people are put off by this alone. It doesn’t help that he’s an ass too - he’s rude to most people, and tends to sound far more condescending than he has any right to be.
So, clearly he has to make it worse by being a violent person too. Simply put, he’s an adrenaline junkie. Oswald loves fighting, not the least because he’s good at it. He’s exactly the sort of person who’d suggest solving problems with violence first, because it’s normally easier to beat them into submission, if not quite the most tactful move that could be done. Calling him bloodthirsty wouldn’t exactly be incorrect and it wouldn’t be farfetched to say that fighting is the core of his being. He likes fights and being a troublemaker and kicking ass (not so much getting his ass kicked), and without those he would feel rather lost and maybe a touch empty. Note that even though he’s pretty violent, he’s normally not malicious - he just likes beating things up and causing relatively harmless trouble more than what’s good for him.
Despite sounding like a completely pompous asshole, he does have some better traits to him. For all his ego and arrogance, the fact is when it comes right down to it he fails in normal life so, so much. He really hates being lonely, as he is wont to being due to his personality, but stubbornly refuses to change his behaviour because he views it as being weak-willed. Besides, clustering is for the weak! Even when he’s in trouble he is reluctant about asking for or accepting help from others, because he should be able to take care of himself, etc.
It’s not difficult to see that Oswald thinks he should be some kind of manly tough guy, only to fail miserably at keeping that image up, whether it is because of his own fallacies or the universe just really likes to make fun of him. Though he may deny this to high hell and back, he’s actually pretty sentimental if you find the right things to talk about. He admires courage and guts; traits he considers to be among the most virtuous that anyone could possibly have, and he has this huge soft spot for kids, especially since he has a couple of his own. He’s a bastard and he’d never deny that, but this doesn’t mean he can’t come to care for people, even if it is in his own weird way.
Speaking of which, Oswald is a little…emotionally retarded. That’s the best way of putting it, anyway. As something who looks human but isn’t, humanity has rubbed off on him over the span of who-knows-how-many-years. A good chunk of his personality, especially the caring bits of it, he sort of soaked in from hanging around with people a lot. He feels pretty conflicted about that - on the one hand, he thinks it’s absolutely ridiculous because trying to be nurturing is against his nature and he Does It Wrong, and he shouldn’t be caring about people when his job is essentially killing a lot of them. On the other hand, he’s gotten emotionally invested in humanity due to spending so much time with them, and having a normal life is actually kind of nice once in a while. Truthfully, he’s a little afraid of the idea that he’s becoming more “human-like”, and more afraid that he sometimes doesn’t find it to be a big deal.
But you never heard any of that. Really. Because he is War, and War shouldn’t be having problems like those.
Strengths:
Physical: He has a lot of these. Built like a tank, hits about as hard as one, extremely high pain tolerance. Seeing his life can basically be summed up as a ball of hilarious pain, being hardy is a must for him. Oswald seems to recover from injuries faster than normal people, but it’s not by much. He is at least fairly skilled in a wide variety of melee weapons, though he prefers blades, and is a very brutal and efficient fighter when he’s not holding back or showing off.
Oh, and he’s immortal. All this really means for him however is that he ages slowly and can’t die through natural means.
Mental: Admittedly, he…doesn’t have much going for him in this department. He’s not exactly stupid (although somewhat lacking in common sense at times), but he’s not the sharpest tack in the box either. He has a lot of knowledge about various things back home, particularly military history, battle techniques and alcoholic beverages.
When given proper motivation and/or made to sit down long enough to think, he’s actually pretty cunning, but it doesn’t often show itself or get used for anything productive. He’s also surprisingly…wise, sort of, given he’s been around for a really long time and seen quite a bit. Again, it doesn’t often show itself, and he’d pretend it never happened even if it did.
Emotional: He is most definitely confident about his capabilities, and seems to lack fear when facing adversary or challenge. He’s also incredibly stubborn, sometimes to the point of being single-minded, which could easily work against him as much as it works for him. And for all his fail and apparent immaturity he can be disciplined and responsible. It’s just not his default state of being.
Weaknesses:
Physical: …Not a whole lot, to be honest. He is killable, but good luck trying to accomplish that if you’re not really powerful. Alternatively, be Genre Savvy enough to realize he can’t survive decapitation, or getting stabbed in the heart spot on. He has an old wound from when he got stabbed in the gut with his own sword; it’s never healed completely and hitting it will hurt him like hell.
Mental: As mentioned, while he's not exactly stupid, he isn't particularly bright either. He operates on a weird sort of logic that doesn’t always consider things like “common sense” or “tact”, which means he might make some stupid, inane decisions just because they sounded like a good idea at the time. His ego, being the huge thing it is, tends to lead him to underestimate opponents and get in over his head unless it’s blatantly obvious he is outmatched.
As a note, he knows nothing about modern things like electronics because they don’t exist in his world.
Emotional: Bluntly put, Oswald is emotionally retarded. He bottles up emotions that don't consist of badassery or smug superiority, which are in themselves partially a cover up for some his issues. Issues include the fact he’s lonely, he feels incredibly old these days, he thinks he shouldn’t get attached to people but it happens anyway, he might be a little depressed - just to name a few. And he’s in denial that they bother him, or that they exist in the first place. He doesn’t really know how to care for people without it seeming awkward or just being a plain old bad idea that could have been done much better. He’s bullheaded enough to think that he doesn’t need anybody when truthfully the ‘being lonely’ thing affects him more than he cares to admit.
May or may not count as a weakness, but as mentioned earlier on, Oswald has a huge soft spot for kids. As in, so huge he can’t bring himself to intentionally hurt one. If they are capable of defending themselves, it’s a different story, but even then he will hold back tremendously. He also will not hurt anyone who he considers ‘civilians’; that is, people who can’t or at least don’t look like they’re able to put up a decent fight. Mostly because if he’s going to pick a fight with someone, it had better be good.
