IC INFORMATION
NAME: Anthony J. Crowley
SERIES: Good Omens
HISTORY: A summary for you.

PERSONALITY: Crowley’s a pretty interesting character especially when looking at where his loyalties lie.

For one he is a demon and as such he has many of the key features landing him such titles: Bastard, selfish, clever, cunning, evil, materialistic, flashy, and possessing a certain insidious intellect, and strangely he’s a cheerful optimist.

Crowley is a demon, yes, but he’s much more than just your standard demon; he’s…how shall we put it…Hell’s most approachable demon. It is funny because his going to earth is actually what changes him. It is also being around humans for so long and messing them around that he comes to grow a certain appreciation and involvement with them that he just can’t seem to waver from. He’s actually quite fascinated by humans and their technological apparatuses, which he uses to create evil and frustrations for the masses. Crowley is so into his job on earth that he’s practically “gone human” taking in much of humans modernized technology; their speech, style and a generalized questioning of the upper powers. He also seems to fit in more than his angelic not so immortal enemy. His six thousand years have also prominently changed him somewhat as he now has some vanity, a rather humanistic outlook on life and he even begins to question Heaven, Hell and the ineffability of God.

He, along with Aziraphale both like humans in their own respective ways and it comes to a point where he actually doesn't want them to be eradicated in the oncoming Apocalypse. He has come to love the world and the humans residing on it which is a major flaw in a demons character. His selfishness is prominent in this way as he calls upon his old friend to help him thwart the plans which have been put into action.

Crowley and Aziraphale’s relationship is another thing which is quite interesting. They both enjoy each other’s company to a point where it’s stated that they get along better than either of their superiors ever would. And in most cases it really does appear that both of them have rubbed off on each other; each showing contrasting characteristics to their respective alignments.

The demon also has a sense of vanity shown clearly in his Bentley which he religiously takes care of since his buying of it in 1926. The car also acts as a sort of symbol to represent something Crowley truly loves and that during the duration of the novel he essentially loses that to protect the Earth. His flat in Mayfair is arbitrarily filled and stocked with high ended technological gadgetries, none of which he has actually used all too much but still he finds them clever and even sold at the fine printing for said electronic warranties.

Crowley you can imagine is selfish though throughout the book he shows more of compassion than Aziraphale in some instances. He actually, at the end of the book, willingly makes a hopeless attempt against Lucifer in order to protect the lives of a handful of humans via tire iron. Another occurrence is when a dove dies due to Aziraphale’s poor and sorry excuse for a magic show going to the gutter. Aziraphale, even though being the angel of the two, makes no attempt at reviving the bird nor does he seem to care; Crowley on the other hand breathes life into the creature as if on a whim not really having to actually do it at all.

Another interesting aspect of Crowley’s character is shown through the care of his houseplants. The way he treats them, in which one part a plant could not grow up to speed with the others wherein he simply gets rid of it for that one reason and that one reason alone shows us that there is an underlying meaning to his actions. Although it does not seem to matter at all it is actually a sorrowful representation of how he is treated by his superiors and those within hell.

Crowley is an exceptionally deep, sympathetic, and most likable character. While he should be despicable and deviously dastardly he seems to be able to defy all those expectations and stereotypes demons are often given with his deep outlook and changed persona. His stern opinion that neither Heaven nor Hell should win the Apocalypse makes him the voice of reason and the gray area character of the book.
