If the PT they send you to is more about backs and less about running, then I can recommend someone on the latter.

I went to a PT specifically for running, after doing similar to you - I had shin splints so bad from one of my attempts several years ago that I had bruising and didn't walk right for about 2 weeks. Of the many things she did that impressed me, she had me walk up and down the hall so should could have a look at how I walked. She asked me very specifically if I'd ever sprained my left ankle (I did in high school, after a big jump while snowboarding), and soon after asked if I'd done some kind of damage to my right knee (I hyperextended it in college, again after a big jump snowboarding). Things she saw just from me walking. Did I mention I was impressed?

I left with a long list of exercises to do, things to look for in shoes, and a slip to go see an orthotics person to get custom foamy things for my shoes. I did all that stuff, including the exercises, and it really worked out. I can now run 3-4 miles at a shot, easily, with zero pain (just did that this morning for example) and even ran a 10k a couple weekends ago with no after effects whatsoever.

Anyhow yeah if you need a recommendation for running let me know. She's in Rosemount now but I'd say it's worth the trip.
