I love when I am occasionally vindicated.
I went years trying to prove to people that two things I recall from my childhood were real, and no one ever believed me until I found proof:
1) That DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince sang a song about Freddy Krueger. I was thrilled as all hell about 2 years ago when I found out this was real and got it on my iPod. I thought I had made it up in my head.
2) That back in the 80's there was a very short lived network sitcom about a modern day Snow White living in a big suburban home. The evil queen and her mirror lived in the basement, and the mirror was the cynical comic relief of the show. I've met absolutely no one who recalls this program, but I found it on Wikipedia, so I feel better about myself.
While we're at it, I have met extraordinarily few people who have heard of the show Herman's Head, and I remember that clear as day, also. Hank Azaria played the best friend. The girl who does Lisa's voice on the Simpsons was in it. I recall enjoying it, but it must have listed, like, 2 minutes.
It makes me think that in about 10-15 years, there are going to be people saying "I swear there was a show on once about a family whose patriarch was sent to prison. Called...Arrested something. I must have imagined it".
And while we're on the subject of glorious TV past, my dad found a channel that shows old episodes of comic book cartoons and it's his new second favorite thing in life. His first are the Supernatural DVDs I got him. He's thrilled with life.
Still enjoying Supernatural...still feeling bad that when it starts back up, it will be opposing The Office. I wish I could watch both without taping one...I never remember to watch anything I tape. "I'll tape this and watch it later"....kiss of death.
I am just dripping sweat here. It's way too humid all of the sudden. AND it's thunderstorming out right now, so...more humidity. I hate summer thunderstorms. It's bright and sunshiney and...pouring down rain. It just evaporates two seconds after it falls and makes me more miserable (alliteration, bonus points). On top of the humidity making me feel like a sweat puddle, it's allergific outside, too. My throat won't stop itching, and my nose is running off of my face. It's making me miserable.
All right, shirt off, pants back on. I can't get comfortable, and I feel white trashy. No combination of apparel I try here is making me feel better.
Every time I feel I miss collecting comics, something comes along that reminds me how stupid either Marvel or DC have become in the last few years. As much as I enjoy Ultimate Spider-Man or Astonishing X-Men, the basic Marvel universe is all screwed up. I just finally got around to reading World War Hulk since it was released in Trade Paperback format, and it's such a giant clusterfuck. Marvel is way too obsessed with the OMG GIANT EPIC EVENT STORY these days, and they keep doing them one right after the other (House of M....Civil War....World War Hulk....Secret Invasion) and it's kind of lost all meaning. While I appreciate it keeps the universe together and everybody's tied in with everyone else, it just feels a bit too much like...meh.
I don't know. World War Hulk was so.....silly. There's a whole planet full of superheroes and villains with varying degrees of superpowers and abilities and intellect. And Hulk comes along and beats everyone up by punching them. Who thinks this stuff up?
I feel like I could go on and on in regards to that, but I'll just alienate everyone. DC has done all of ONE THING right in the last 5 years (Seriously, it was 52 surrounded by a lot of incoherent, garbage stories), and Marvel is just drowning itself in mega-happenings. And here I am, still alienating.
I really wish I had a subscription to Time and Newsweek. I read them both every week, and I always want to save several articles from each, but I never feel like buying them. I really need a subscription to them so I can start having them on-hand when I am home so I can reference what I read and elaborate on my own thoughts. But I never get a chance to as it stands.
Does anyone know any other good news magazines?
I'm going to do some writing tonight if I can ever get comfortable and not sweaty-drippy.
