There were a lot of good reasons not to trust Aperture Science technology further than he could throw it. Less, in fact, because they made pretty lightweight tech, and even without the armor he could probably toss it reasonably far. And was frequently tempted to; this tech had cost them a good man. That was the first reason.
The second was that it couldn't be trusted. Even if GLaDOS was deactivated. He didn't like to say dead, or rather, couldn't, with any accuracy. But those systems were robust, and rather than leave them down under the water, he'd chosen to bring them up, to the scrapyard, where he could keep an eye on them.
That was part of the reason for Terrible. Not just to keep people out, to keep an eye on what people took from the scrapyard so that he had an idea if anyone was selecting components that could turn out to be a doomsday weapon, but to keep an eye on what was being left at the scrapyard, in the section he'd separated off, for his own projects.
The proximity was troublesome, but scattering Aperture tech all over the island wasn't a viable option, either. So it was all in the one place, and he was taking all measures he could think of to ensure that if any of it started talking to each other, he'd know.
That was part of the reason that this had taken so long. Months, for a basic repair job? Certainly, on a portal device designed for quantum tunnelling, that might have taken some people months, if they could do it at all, but they weren't Tony Stark.
He could have done it faster but he had been, for him, uncharacteristically cautious. That, and he'd had some modifications to do, since he didn't just want to open a portal to space or across the island. Useful, certainly, but he had a set of conditions to recreate. He'd built on a repulsor. He'd done the math. He'd applied some of Peter's math.
The problem had been stabilization. A minute or so was no good, but that's all they'd gotten, up in the space station. But that had been a random interaction, and this set-up was designed to accomplish it. It was solid.
It was... very dangerous.
But something would probably happen, and that was science, for you.
