I came across Regina Spektor the way I come across most of the music I listen to: my friend from Alabama JT liked her and started talking about her, and I listened to some of her stuff. Next thing I knew, I bought her latest CD, Soviet Kitsch, and am in wierd music heaven. I highly recommend "Ghost of Corporate Future" "Chemo Limo" and "Your Honor", though "Ode to Divorce" has been growing on me.

I've heard something about the Historian (i.e. I think I've seen it somewhere). I hope it gets better...I'm having an odd image of a vampire hiding among paintings in the Louvre now... This image is almost enough for me to pick the book up. (I really haven't been that erudite, as I tire of one thing, I need to pick something else up, so as a result, my backpack is half full of books I'm just reading on my own).

You would adore Candide. The entire play is a series of snide and hilarious jabs against everyone Voltaire dislikes. Its good to have good footnotes, because otherwise, you don't get some of them; some of the humor is eternal (actually, most of it is) but you don't notice things like how he makes his editor's name an insult and makes up a new word for idiocy to describe a magazine that had been criticizing him. Yes, he is quite petty, and it makes me want to hug him, especially since he can put things like that right next to amazing and hilarious criticisms of the Church, the nobility, and basically everyone in existence.

Yes, Cyrano wins, mostly because if he and Bluntschli were in a duel, then he would compose a ballade while fighting him, whereas Bluntschli would just make a hilarious comment. I refuse to contemplate who would win. Rest assured that Bluntschli has my complete admiration nonetheless, and if I ever divorce Cyrano, I will consider marrying him (although, part of his charm is that he gets Riana at the end, whereas, Cyrano ends with Roxane watching as he dies, so its a lot easier to write myself into the story).

I think "The Elephant March" would work really really well in Riverbend (and we really need submissions). I'd love to read it first though, if you'd like. Just email it to me.

All best, and may your art loving vampire book gain momentum!
Becca
