Jul 03, 2010 14:41

[So, Cissie is having a Bad Day. Between Rayne's post and the unfiltered comments in Sylar's revealing that he's been keeping things from her and has a bit of bloodlust, and her talk with Tim about his deal and what Sylar's been up to, she is not a happy camper. The only side of Sylar she ever saw before was his nice side and he convinced her he ( Read more... )

[Sam, decked out in trainers and running gear, is all prepared to go for a nice jog in the gym, and oh yes, he even makes a few laps! Quite a productive start-- hey, wait. What's this? Sam knows the sound of unrestrained aggression when he hears it, and he's drawn to it like a typical copper. He approaches Cissie, eyeing her with an arched brow, and crosses his arms.]

You can lay off now. I think it's dead.

[He's totally concerned about her doing this while her arm's broken, but he decides not to dad out about it.]

[She's at least not using her broken arm to beat on the bag? ...She'll still probably regret this tomorrow. But she still doesn't notice Sam until he's rightthere and she might jump a little when he speaks. And maybe get bumped by the punching bag when it swings back from her last kick.] Oof.

[Cissie brushed her hair out of her face and blushed.] Um. Yeah, maybe. Hi, Sam.

[THAT'S A GOOD THING. But Sam is still concerned about the strain. He moves forward to try to grab hold of the bag and steady it, but stops as it bumps Cissie. TOO LATE, AS USUAL, SAM.]

Hey. D'you think you should be... y'know. [EXPECTANT LOOK AT THE ARM.] Because that? Looked like the sorta workout you're gonna feel the next day.

[Sam, you fail at not dadding out.]

[IT'S OKAY, SAM. Cissie needs people to dad out at her, even if she doesn't realize it! She grimaces, because he's totally right. And yet, she's going to shrug it off.]

I'm okay. I just--needed to beat something up.

I know the feeling. What, uh-- did something happen? [Doop de doop, he left his commnicator in his room and missed everything.] I mean, apart from the usual death and destruction.

[She's quiet for a minute, because she's not exactly sure how to talk about all of it.] How much of a second chance should we give people here? Inmates. If they say they want--if what they're saying to one person doesn't match up with what they're saying to everyone else? How do you know which is the truth?

[He thinks for a moment.] Some blokes, you can tell right off when they're lying. Here? It's never easy. You've got to... see it in their actions. [He gives her a pointed look.] Nevermind everyone else. Do you think this person's lying? What do your instincts tell you? [He has to hand it to Gene, sometimes instincts are key.]

[She frowns at her feet. This has been the problem with Sylar all along. For every time he's short tempered, he's also nice with her. She hasn't seen his dangerous, bloodlust side.] I don't know. They--he's nice to me. He says he wants to change and I've never seen, or heard--but he's been keeping things from me and I don't know if it's because he's trying to manipulate me or what the hell he's doing.

[He wants to ask who it is, but decides not to go that route just yet. He knows he's biased against some inmates, and it'll colour whatever advice he's trying to give if he knows who she's talking about.]

What's he keeping from you?

Apparently he killed someone. Like a week ago. But he keeps saying he doesn't want to be judged for what he's done in the past and he wants to change and-- [She stops because SHE JUST REALIZED HOW STUPID THIS SOUNDS.]

...I'm an idiot.

[He's slightly taken back, and he looks at her with concern now.] Cissie... [He's keeping his voice soft, sympathetic.] If he's saying that, and then he's killing people, he's--

[He shakes his head.]

It's easy to be taken in when you... when you want to believe in the best in somebody. [After a pause, he may as well ask.] Who is he?

[She scrubs at her face, groaning.] I just thought... How are we supposed to rehabilitate people if we don't even try to believe in them, you know?

[She sighs and looks basically anywhere but at Sam, taking a minute before answering grudgingly.] Sylar.

It's not enough to just believe in somebody. It has to work on both sides. Give and take. If they don't-- if they really don't want to work for it, then all their talk amounts to nothing but lies...

[He trails off with that word, staring at Cissie with disbelief when she says who it is.]

No no no, you can't be serious. Sylar? [He groans and runs his hands over his face, shaking his head.] Don't. Don't fall for it. I did, my-- my inmate did, and it's just-- it's crap, Cissie. Everything he tells you.

[Cissie is embarrassed and upset and Sam's reaction makes her a little defensive. She shrugs, hugging herself.] I--but what if it's not? I mean, if he means it just once...

[Yes, she knows how stupid that sounds. She can't help it.]

I know you want to believe the best in him, but the man's a manipulator. You can't go by his words alone; you have to take his actions into account.

[He sighs and reaches out to give her a reassuring touch, but stops himself.]

It's just... He's given me the same lines before. Prefect, too. And then-- then he did everything he could to set Prefect back and ruin what little recovery we'd worked for. He attacked me when I confronted him; he drove Prefect to suicide. And just the other month, he tried to do the same thing to Prefect again.

He's been here about as long as me, and he's been saying the same lines over and over again, and he's never... ever meant it. He just wants to be able to keep on doing what he's been dong-- lying, killing, collecting powers-- while running to somebody for sympathy every time he gets caught. He doesn't want to change. It's not that I think he's beyond redemption, it's just... You're setting yourself up to get hurt. Change has to start with him.

[Cissie listens quietly and ducks her head, torn between feeling shame, embarrassment, disappointment and a whole bunch of other unnamed emotions. The entire problem was that Sylar's actions around her were totally different than his actions around everyone else. It might be nice to think she could help him change, but if he was just manipulating her, like she'd been afraid of in the first place... But he had been killing and manipulating Prefect recently.

She doesn't say anything at first, because she's afraid she's going to cry, which is the last thing she wants. When she does speak, her voice is dull and flat.]

And now he's playing me. I'm supposed to be the one he gets sympathy from. That's why he's keeping parts of his journal entries from me, and why he always marks everything private when we talk. And if it goes badly, he'll take it out on someone. Me, or Tim.
